taxi's from airport

Hi, after you collect your luggage, just follow the signs for taxis, it%26#39;s all very easy. The taxi ranks are well operated - like all transport in Singapore, quite efficient. Depending on the time of day, it should cost you a bit under S$20.(There are surcharges later in the day)

We always take a bit of local currency and use ATMs to withdraw cash - there are machines in the arrivals hall. Cheers, Haggis

The taxis take credit/debit cards too, but there are some money exchange counters and ATMs in the arrivals lounge at Changi Airport.

I have looked at just about every bank in the UK and the only one that doesn%26#39;t abosolutly kill you with fees for withdrawing money abroad is the Flex account debit card from Nationwide (well worth opening one just for holidays, no fees at all). The only curreny to use in Singapore is the S$. You can pay with other currencies at hotels and bigger shops but you will get hammered with the exchange rate. I would bring £ notes and changes them for S$ in Singapore rather than doing this in the UK. You can end up with nearly 5-8% more cash this way. You can change it at the airport when you arrive, the rates are not significantly more than downtown to make it worthwile hunting fot the best rate.

brilliant that helps a lot guys thanks

I believe if you use card to pay taxi fare, there is a 10% service fee + 7% GST on the metered fare.

SO DO NOT USE YOUR CREDIT CARD to pay taxi fare.

Taxis - grab it from the main taxi rank in the terminal. The currency in SIngapore is Singapore Dollars - you will need those as cash. I%26#39;ve had travel agents in the UK tell me I need US dollars as the best currency to take and thats utter rubbish. I would never try to spend a foriegn curerency in SIngapore - there are some places that advertise taking it that I have seen (but pretty few), but then there are loads of them here in Cambridge with our tourist levels - and the rates they offer are appalling.

Cost to a city centre hotal - probably about 20Sing Dollars for base rate and airport surcharge. Add 35% surcharge for rush hour times and 50% surcharge for really late night.

(See here for fare scales) http://www.smrt.com.sg/taxis/fares.asp

I always just use ATMs for withdrawing money by ATM card or credit card. Im with HSBC and my wife with Barclays - even with the cash handling fees, I still find it the most convenient method and the conversion rate provides me with decent to good value for money assuming I do not grab 10GBP worth here and 10GBP worth there from ATMs. Check with your bank for your charges to see how economical it makes it. You need to know your daily limit on the card and work out how much that lets you withdraw in a given time period as well.

You will want to tell your bank you are going, as UK banks seem to have had a drive on for security in the last 18months or so and regard the Far East as a potential risk area for blocking cards off if they see transactions they don%26#39;t expect - credit and ATM cards both are an issue according both my bank and my wife%26#39;s

cheers myrm thats mega usefull info mate as im travelling to thailand afterwards and i was wondering will i need to tell the bank so they dont block my card - how much can i withdraw a day blah blah.so nice one m8 i know this is sing forum but you seem in the know and if you have any better ideas about taking money to thailand please let me know as this will be my first visit . cheers m8

Hi There

My Best Advise to you is as follow:

Change Ur Pound or $$ into atleast S$100 for Taxi ride %26amp; a meal/drink later.

A taxi ride into City (Orchard) is about S$25 - S$28 depending on the time you arrive.

For your trip to Thailand, change Ur $$ or Pound into Thai Baht here in Singapore.

You can find a few $$ Xchange counter in Lucky Plaza. The one I alway go to is Rabi Trading (This is just right behind the Sport Retail store - corner nearest to CK Tang Departmental store).

Good Luck

thanks me^only thats everything i need to know mate cant wait to go now 20 days and counting woo hoo

If you are travelling light, there is the MRT, or subway from the airport just 1 change at City Hall to get to Orchard. S$2.40/per
