cigarettes

I have just read that if you carry cigarettes that you have purchased duty free in sydney that you will have to pay duty on them when you arrive in singapore.

Does anyone know if it is still cheaper to buy them in sydney and then pay the extra duty in singapore or would it be just better to buy them from a shop in singapore.

Its our first time to singapore, we will be staying at the Furama city centre for 2 nights before a cruise. Are there plenty of cigarette shops in singapore?

Jody/belinda, There are NO concession for bringing any tobacco/Cigs into Singapore.

Last March we were paying typically $5.50-$6.50, (Sing), per pack. ( I don%26#39;t smoke, the odd cigar perhaps, but my wife does). Singaporean anti-smoking laws are some of the toughest in the world, and set to get even tougher.

Shops selling cigs in Singapore are nowhere near as obvious, or available as they are in Aus, U.S.A or the UK, but you can buy ciggies, you just have to look a little harder than in many other countries.

Hope this helps, enjoy Singapore when you go. Alan

I think cigs bought at 7-Eleven costs SGD12. Not sure how much duty customs will charge for bringing in duty-free cigs bought at other airports but it won%26#39;t be little! Like Alan says, SG has one of the toughest laws on cigs and illegal drugs.

Check this out, it%26#39;s the official Singapore customs page. Alan.

Plently of shops sell cigarettes in Singapore although they are expensive (S$10-12 depending on brand). However, smoking them in public is not easy as many public areas are designated non-smoking zones so be careful where you light up.

If you are staying only 2 nights, it may easier just to buy whatever you need in Singapore rather than go throught the hassle at customs.

thanks for your help everyone. Ive now found heaps of info on the do%26#39;s and dont%26#39;s

I just not worth paying the duty the duty cost is huge.

I have just read all this information and am still confused. We are just overnight in Singapore - does that mean I have to put my cigarettes and wine in a bond area at the airport and collect them when I leave???

It means that you cannot take ciggies into Singapore without paying tax on them, under any circumstances, but yes, you can leave them at the customs hall and collect them on your way out without paying tax on them. Hope this helps. Alan

Thanks Alan, what about leaving stuff at left luggage. Is that OK?

AussieAnge,

You are allowed up to 1lt of wine in so at least you%26#39;ll be able to enjoy a duty free drink.
