Singapore for 2 days mid May

We will be arriving in the evening from Australia. Staying at Swissotel Merchant Court.

What is the easiest, reasonably priced way to get to and from our hotel from the Airport.

What must see and do things could be fitted in comfortably in our 2 days. We would like to get the feel for Singapore. Is there a round the city bus tour. After that we like shopping, eating and watching the world go by. Suggested places for causual, good evening meals would be appreciated. We are reasonably fit over 60%26#39;s

Since u r at SMC, u should enjoy Chinatown or walk across to Clark Quay. Chinatown has plenty of choices for food, shopping and sightseeing.

enjoy !

Singapore for 2 days mid May

Taxi, around S$25. The list de_last-one provided covered all the bases. There a few free tourists guides to collect at the airport, which are useful and may help identify what you would like to see.

Hi Anne,

For Tour bus / hop-on bus, you may use either

- Hippo / Duck tour: http://www.ducktours.com.sg/

- Singapore Airlines Hop On bus: http://siahopon.asiaone.com.sg/

- Trishaw tour: visitsingapore.com/publish/stbportal/en/home…

Here are some ideas:

What to visit? Chinatown, Little India, Arab street, Geylang at evening (if you don%26#39;t mind visiting a red light district).

Shopping? Orchard road, Bugis market.

Evening food? Clarke Quay, Chijmes

Lunch? go to one of the numerous food courts!

Hi Anne,

the taxi fare will depend on what time you boarded the taxi:

Peak Hour Surcharge

Monday - Friday : 7.00am to 9.30am 35% of metered fare 35% of metered fare

Monday – Saturday: 5.00pm to 8.00pm 35% of metered fare 35% of metered fare

Applicable at the time of boarding. Not applicable on Sundays and Public Holidays.

Midnight - 5:59am 50% of metered fare

Location Surcharges

Changi Airport

Friday-Sunday from 5.00pm to 12 midnight $5.00 $5.00

At all other times $3.00 $3.00

Since you mentioned you are reaching Sg in the evening, and if you happen to catch the taxi between 5pm to 8pm, yo%26#39;ll be charged an additional of 35% of metered fare. And if it happens to fall on a weekend, you will be charged another S$5 for location surcharge. And when you enter the CBD, there would be ERP road charges.

Taking all these into account, your fare would be around S$32.00 (maximum).

You could access this website to calculate your taxi fare in Sg: http://www.worldtaximeter.com/singapore

(please note you would have to key in the address name of the hotel, and not the hotel name. And remember to choose the correct timing!)

In your case the hotel address is 20 Merchant Road

As mentioned by previous post, try the hop on-and-off buses, which will have a commentator on the bus to guide you. The DuckTour would not be informative though. And if you would like to take a river cruise you can try the bumboats. Good experience along the river. And yes, the Trishaw would be interesting! But I%26#39;ll recommend you to take during the evening so that it%26#39;s less humid. But if you love the sunshine and don%26#39;t mind sweating it out, by all means enjoy the ride in the day! http://www.rivercruise.com.sg/home.htm

Not to be missed when you go to Chinatown is the Chinatown Heritage Centre. Their props vividly depict the life of the early chinese settlers.

For a feel of the local culture, you could also take a peep at the various religious temples in Sg. For the Chinese we have the Taoist temple and the Buddist. For Indians the Indian Temple. In Kampong Glam you could visit the Malay Praying Room, and also in Bugis you could visit the Sikh ';Temple';. There is a lovely St Andrews Church in located just above the Raffles City Mrt Station. It%26#39;s architectural style is colonial, and the aerial view of the building is in the shape of a cross. Take a peep if you have time since you are not faraway from it. =)

A lovely ambience to chillout/dinner at night along the river would be at the One Fullerton, which is located just opposite The Fullerton Hotel (used to he the Singapore Post in Colonial Times). Another alternative nearby would be the restaurants along the Esplanade (next to the river also), and you could also try out delicious local food at the Glutton Bay (open-air food centre) where it is located just next to the Esplanade building.

Since you are only in Sg for 2 days, Sentosa might not be a good choice as it will easily take up 1 day of your time. But if are interested, you could check out this website:

www.sentosa.com.sg

There is no lack for shopping malls in Sg. Very near your hotel there is this mall named The Central. One of the latest developments.

But the shopping paradise is nestled along the Orchard Road where you could find malls like the Wisma Atria, the Takashimaya, the CK Tangs, the Heerens, The Shaw House, The Paragon.

In Bugis you will find the open air bugis street market, the Parco and Junction 8 Shopping Mall.

In City Hall area you will find the Raffles City Shopping, the Suntec City, the Marina Square, the Millenia.

I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll be spoilt for choice, whether for food or shop.

For Casual meals you could try out the hawker centres in Sg:

List of all Hawker Centres in Singapore

Adam Road Food Centre, Alexandra Village Food Centre, Amoy Street Food Centre, Bedok South Road Market and Food Centre, Bukit Timah Food Centre, Changi Village Market and Hawkers%26#39; Centre, Cheng San Market %26amp; Cooked Food Centre, Chinatown Complex, Chinatown Food Street, Chomp Chomp Food Centre, Dunman Food Centre, East Coast Lagoon Food Village, Fengshan Market and Food Centre, Geylang Serai Food Centre, Golden Mile Food Centre, Golden Shoe Hawker Centre, Haig Road Food Centre, Hong Lim Food Centre, Lau Pa Sat, Lavender Food Square, Marine Parade Market and Cooked Food Centre, Maxwell Road Food Centre, Maysin Food Centre, Newton Food Centre, Old Airport Cooked Food Centre, Satay Club, Seah Im Food Centre, Serangoon Gardens Market and Food Centre, SoulFood Hawker Bistro, S-11 Stamford Coffee Shop, Tekka Centre, Tiong Bahru Food Centre, Victoria Street Food Centre, Whampoa Food Centre, Whampoa Drive Food Centre, Zion Riverside Food Centre, 409 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10

you could access it from this web:

Hope this would help you. In doubt of locations, just feel free to ask Singaporeans or your concierge when in Sg.

Cheers,

Suying

What a wonderful website this is. Thank you all for the many suggestions. You have given me lots and lots of ideas to think about so now I will do my homework.

Hello

Definitely try a food court, I didn%26#39;t until my last visit and I loved it. China Town is great and do the heritage centre - doesn%26#39;t look much from the outside but great inside. The Arab quarter is nice with lots of quaint shops and a beautiful mosque. It may seem naff but you really should do the Long Bar at Raffles in the evening for a Singapore Sling. Then perhaps pop over to the Chjimes complex (opposite corner to Long Bar entrance at Raffles)- go via the back entrance where you will see the beautiful white church lit up. Also good to eat at Clarke Quay and Boat Quay.

A trip on the river on a bum boat is good to get orientation.

On foot wander around the Colonial and Financial districts. Have a nosey around the Fullerton Hotel or try the Shangri La for afternoon tea.

If you do have time for a trip I really enjoyed the Changi tour.

We have usually got taxis from the airport, they seem cheaper than pre paid tour operator transfers. Taxis around the city are good too but do try to underground.

Have a great time..

Hi Anne I always get the shuttle - see Changi Airport web site - it is located directly as you come out of arrivals and is about $12 and goes to all major hotels - they leave frequently so I usually find there are only 4 or 5 others on it - when returning to airport you have to book three hours in advance. Beats the $20 plus fee for taxi
