We will be visiting Singapore Dec/Jan and am tossing up between staying at the Mandarin Oriental on the Marina or staying in a more central location at either the Hilton or the Singapore Marriott on Orchard Rd.
What are the pros and cons of each place.
Does anyone know if there is easy access from the Mandarin Oriental into Orchard Rd?
Marina accommodation versus Orchard Rd area
MO is only a few MRT stops to and from Orchard, there are buses and cabs that will take anywhere from a 5 to 10 mins depending on traffic (bus may be longer).
MO has a water view that both Hilton and Marriott will not be able to provide. Hilton has small rooms compare to MO while Marriott is not really worth the $ (for what u pay, there are better choices).
Overall, I would stay in MO for quality of hotel and the area (suntec, marina and raffles city, walking distance to Boat Quay).
Good luck

thanks for your suggestions - I appreciate your prompt response!

I say go wtih Mandarin Oriental
Have a good time
I have been wondering exactly the same thing as Ozzigirl.
After doing some reading I think the Marina area is so much nicer, hopefully with some nice restaurants.
You can always take the MRT to Orchard road.
Orchard road is primarily for shopping, i is not really waking distance to anywhere else worthwhile. However there are 3 MRT stations along its length at connect with all the 3 main MRT lines so ut very easy to get just about anywhere.
MarinaSQ hotel are still a bit of a trek to the MRT station (though there is a new one opening when the new circle line start running), though you have the option of walking underground to City Hall MRT in about 10-15min. There are far more places of interst, including shopping within walking distance. The further off night spots are also withing strolling distance in the evenings when you don%26#39;t have the heat to contend with.
Hi Ozzigirl
If you choose to stay at Mandarin oriental, this Guide on getting around could help you. They are the same Bus# but the Bus stop nearest to our Hotel, would be the one just behind the Floating Stadium.
Walk out of hotel towards the main road, On your left is the bus stop for those buses I mention in the link above. Towards to ur right would be THe Esplanade Threater on the Bay.
Have a good time.
I am thinking that hotels like the
Intercontinental and Swissotel (Stamford/Merchant) are a little more convenient based on easy access to the MRT when compared to those in the Marina area (Pan Pacific, Marina Mandarin, Conrad Centennial). (I know others may disagree).
The reason is access to the MRT system. I have been trying to determine the best area based upon easy access to transportation, and avoiding the crowds of Orchard road. Then again, if shopping is your priority, Orchard road may be the spot for you.
I want to visit a number of the hawker food centers in Bugis, Chinatown, Vivo City and others (Amoy Street Food Centre, Bedok South Road Market), so for me getting around easily and cheaply is important. :)
Ops, here%26#39;s the link:
