singapore april 2009

Hi, can anyone suggest me a good location for the hotels, which is near to the food area (walking distance, very very near), near to the shopping areas. I want something like orchard road, but with lower rate of the room.

We will be travelling with our children, ages 3 to 13, so it should be in a great location with a clean environment. Our budget is S$ 120.00 to S$ 200.00

Thank you so much

hi! you may want to try these hotels, please note that i have not stayed in them before.

Hotel Fragrance chain - Selegie branch (very close to Orchard, Little India, entrance near to main road, looks decent), try to avoid those located near Geylang if you will feel uncomfortable (eg: Crystal, Pearl, Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire, Sunflower) as Geylang is our red light district, it is still safe as lots of locals go there for the food. Its Selegie is closest to Orchard and quite new.

Hotel 81 chain - Selegie Branch (again, try to avoid its hotels located near or in Geylang if you%26#39;re uncomfortable)

hope these help. have a good holiday here! :)

hi thank you for the suggestion ... let me check the review of these hotels.

i just did a search for the reviews and they weren%26#39;t good at all. sorry for the dubious recommendation.

here%26#39;s another hotel chain that you might want to try, they should be a better grade as their prices are also higher.

Albert Court Hotel is very near to Little India, it%26#39;s a few mins away from Fragrance Hotel Selegie branch. it%26#39;s a row rise hotel, you may like it.

from the above link, you will be able to access a few other hotels, The Elizabeth is located in the heart of Orchard Road, but it%26#39;s kind of ';hidden';, so your first time there might be tricky although most taxi drivers will be able to find it. it%26#39;s a four to eight mins walk out to the main street. Golden Landmark is located near Bugis, not really as nice as the other two mentioned. Orchard Parade can be pricey, located at the other end of Orchard Rd. forget about Changi because it%26#39;s located in Changi. again, never stayed in any of them, just know them by their looks and location.

and if you don%26#39;t mind staying in a quiet area and climbing up and down a slope daily, you can try hangout at mt emily (hangout@mt emily), the reviews are quite favourable. it%26#39;s also around Selegie area which means it%26#39;s just mere mins to Orchard.

Hi pinkevil, thank you for the very useful information. Just wanted to ask, about the hangout, i checked on their website, seems quite ok the hostel, but just want to make sure about the climbing up and down the slope, is it really high the stairs? i%26#39;ll be travelling with my children and we have luggages ...

Does anyone have the picture of the way going up there? just want to have a clear picture about it.

thank you so much

Btw, how many kids ? Your post had mentioned kids and ages but not amount. Not all family rooms can take 5.

And, I assumed u want to be in Orchard road coz of shopping ? If u r planning to buy lots of branded big name stuff eg. Chanel, Boss, Ungaro, etc then Orchard will be a good choice but generally speaking, away from Orchard, shopping is just as good. Marina and Raffles areas r good places for shopping.

My recommendation is to be near an MRT so u have access to all destinations as well as walkable to some attractions. The best choices for a base is better off Orchard Road than along Orchard. U will not only save a bit of $ off your lodging, u get better quality as well as cooler neighborhoods to walk to and explore. Try Chnatown or near Bugis areas or a hotel like Allson.

If u r not big on facilities (pool), would recommend u try YMCA International (perfect location, right in the middle of Orchard, smack in the middle between the Raffles City/Marina Square shopping belt and Orhard/Scotts area) or a budget hotel like Strand.

Good Luck

hi milyvels,

i haven%26#39;t been to the hangout hostel before, so i don%26#39;t really know how steep the slope is or how far it will take you, but from the website, for those in their 20s, it seemed to take them about 5 to 15 mins. for your 1st time there, i would strongly suggest that you catch a taxi from the airport to the hotel. on top of giving the hostel%26#39;s address, just tell them it%26#39;s near Peace Centre, Selegie area or the Sophia road area, better still, just print out the location map for the taxi drivers. and on your last day, you should take a cab too. if you call a taxi, you may have to pay extra, from the reviews, it seems that it%26#39;s about S$5 more per trip.

btw, i%26#39;ve sent you a private message on the booking system. hope you read it. :)

thank you so much for the advises. I%26#39;m not looking for branded things, more on kid%26#39;s stuff with competitive price.

I have 4 kids, ages 13, 12, 10 and 3 years old, there will be 7 of us, including me, my husband and my mother inlaw who is 71 years old, that%26#39;s why need to know the stairs going to hangout.

We need 2 rooms for all of us, i open the albert court website yesterday but cant get the rate yet for april.

Ok, i%26#39;ll try to check on allson hotel also.

Thank you again ..

If u dont mind everyone staying in one room, u can try the Strand%26#39;s family room.

Btw, is your budget per room or total for two rooms per night ?

Good Luck
