Chicken Rice and Currency Exchange

So I%26#39;ve heard that Chicken Rice is the traditional Singapore dish...am I right? OK, so if I am right...where do I go in Singapore to get THE BEST Chicken Rice dish (nothing too expensive please)?

Also, I%26#39;m obviously going to be in the need to exchange currency into Singapore Dollars and Malay Ringgits...I%26#39;ve heard that Mustafa Center is the place to go because people get batter rates...true? Can I get both currencies there?

It is a Corner Stall all the way to the back - Facing the Apartment - on the same row as the Muslim Stall - The Chilli sauce is to die for.

(3) The Hainanese Chicken Rice at ParkWay Parade Food Centre %26amp; market. THis stall is RIGHT opposite - facing the row of Muslim Stall - The chilli Sauce is equally to die for.

Hi LeoRC,

The ';BEST'; Chicken rice is a relative term. A tasty chicken would most probably mean that the chicken meat is tender, juicy in that it is fresh and not stale/stiff meat, well cooked in the sense that the chicken meat has absorbed the flavorings well. =p Another important aspect would be the rice. The rice itself has a flavoring too. Well cooked rice will be very fragrant and tasty. It eats well even without the chicken. =D In my younger days when my friends go so broke, they will just order the chicken rice without the chicken... for 30cents! LOL.

There is generally 2 types of chicken rice in Singapore. One is the Roasted (brown skin) and the other is the white (steamed) Chicken. You will see shops giving different names to the chicken like ';Hainanese Chicken Rice'; - Hainanese is one of the chinese dialect groups. There are many different dialects among the chinese. Another famos one is known as the ';Kampong/kampong'; Chicken rice. Kampong/kampung meant malay village. And it was said/felt that chicken from the villages are more tasty because it is naturally fed in the wild and not from the commercial farms where the chickens had been injected to grow bigger.

You will see many chicken stalls in Singapore claiming this and that... and not all are authentic.

Me^Only has given you some famos chicken rice stall names for you. And you could well try them out. =)

With regard to the changing of currency, frankly i dont see a huge difference... perhaps it%26#39;s just a 0.01 difference?

Some pple say Chinatown, some pple say Mustafa, and I say, doesnt really matter unless you are really preparing to change a big sum of cash... which I think is unnecessary in Singapore unless you wanna splurge on high-end restaurants? Or unless you wanna pay your hotel fees in cash?

For normal expenses, Singapore is pretty much cheap.

A chicken rice will only cost you S$3-S$4 at a coffee shop. And a coke about S$1.20. If in foodcourt, if you are a big eater, perhaps about S$12. And if you intend to take MRT... it%26#39;s very affordable. You hardly spend more than S$100 a day for ethnic sight-seeing if you dont intend to go on shopping spree.

Cheers,

Suying

Be aware though, many of the Singaporen/Asian %26#39;%26#39;Chicken-rice%26#39;%26#39; dishes are a little on the undercooked side, chickenwise, nothing wrong with it, I guess%26#39;%26#39;, but chicken blood on my plate is not my thing, Steak cooked rare, yes, delicious, but I like my chicken well cooked. It%26#39;s all a matter of taste I s%26#39;pose. Alan

Hi Alan,

Agree with you totally. I also don%26#39;t like bloody Chickens. Looks a bit disgusting. =p

IMHO, good chicken should be just well-cooked, neither over-cooking or under-cooking. It%26#39;s never in my understanding that good chickens are undercooked. No blood should be seen.

However, it%26#39;s tough for you to gauge if the chicken has blood... until you tear its meat apart to the bones. Tough choice.

Another Chicken Rice place, is on Liang Seah Street.

This is RIGHT opposite the Maggie Thai %26amp; Chinese Restaurant (Dun eat at this Thai Restaurant). It it the last corner restaurant behind 101 Building.

This corner Chicken place also serve delicious Beef Hor Fun (And various other Zhe Char (Stir Fried) food.

My favourite for best rate is Sheen Int%26#39;l

Suying......U just mention about the fine point of a good chicken rice ^__^......I just thought I add wat I lookout for in a good steam chicken: No Chicken hair still visible anywhere, Shining skin, plump chicken (After steaming)...

As for Roast Chicken, I find it too dry %26amp; once long ago, a food industry expert mention that, Most chicken rice stall used chicken that are not so fresh for Roast chicken ^__^. (Cos after Roast / Fried, one cannot tell if the chicken is fresh or not ^__^).

Have fun

Me^Only, great point mentioned! Hairs are yeeks! It%26#39;s hard to see though most times... coz the steamed chicken are usually wet/oily/sauces on it, hence difficult to see if it really has hairs.

And I didnt know that about roasted chicken! No wonder most roasted chicken I ate are less tasty... but still i like the skimpy roasted feel. =D

Personally I always visit the stall in Katong area known as the ';Five Stars Chicken Rice';, abit hard for tourists to get there though.

Cheers,

Suying
