Me and my family will be visiting wonderful Singapore between 24-31st January, 2009. I know it’s the Chinese New Year, but that’s the way it worked out.
While the wife will cruise the malls, and my 6 year old will prefer the Zoo and Sentosa, I’m here for the real stuff : food.
We have visited S’pore many times, but this time I plan to go a little more in-depth, thanks to the pages I’ve read on this forum. I’ve made a list of must-do places. Do tell me if I’m on the right track :
1. Jumbo Seafood (at East Coast or Dempsey
Hill ?)
2. Palm Beach Seafood Restaurant (next to
Merlion).
3. Ponggol Choon Seng Seafood.
4. Lau Pau Sat (for Satay).
5. Red House at East Coast.
6. No Signboard (at Gaylang).
7. Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken (Maxwell Road,
food Centre).
7a. Old Swee Kee (for Chicken Rice).
8. Teh Tarik at Lau Pau Sat.
9. Fish Head Curry at Muthu’s (Indian) or
Ocean Curry Fish Head (Chinese) or Karu’s
Indian Banana Leaf Restaurant.
10. Chilli Crab at Matter Road Seafood.
How am I doing with my list ? Any I should add or drop ? Suggestions welcome…..and thank you Singapore, for your wonderful food inventions.
Woody.
PS : Over 6 days, I plan to cover atleast 70-80% of these joints, given that most will be closed on 26th / 27th
My Hawker Itinerary : any suggestions ?
It seems you%26#39;re really into seafood, so I would recommend you try the oyster fried egg (oh lua jian) at Glutton%26#39;s Bay. Their hokkien mee and carrot cake are also very good. There is also a good seafood stall there. You might also want to head to Hong Lim hawker centre at Chinatown for crayfish hor fun (flat noodles) and prawn noodles. Another good hawker centre to hang around for a good long meal is Adam Road hawker centre. Most of their food is fantastic, but they%26#39;re really famous for their prawn noodles, nasi lemak and mutton soup (the Indian style one is very good).
Do try to head to these famous hawker centres in your list and mine early, maybe by 11+ a.m. to avoid the crazy lunch crowd. Otherwise you will end up queuing a long time for the food and have problems getting a table.
My Hawker Itinerary : any suggestions ?
Thanks, rockabella, have noted your suggestions. You said 11am ? Wow, that%26#39;s early !
Dempsey is still very popular so do make a reservation. I would prefer to go to the one in East Coast.
Hey Woody
just curious....
mentioned all those lists.....
you sure you know how to go to all those places or not...
i mean.... they are not exactly served by the easy MRT and i doubt you can achieve even half of what you want to do.
Hi There,
The recently reopened Tiong Bahru Market houses some excellent stalls (It is right next to Tiong Bahru MRT station, so you don%26#39;t need any navigation skills to get there...).
Golden Mile Food Centre on 505 Beach Road, near Arab Street and Kampong Glam (a step away from Hajjah Fatimah Mosque), is where you can find many stalls that specialize in fabulous Muslim foods... both Malay and Indian.
Indian food: Banana Leaf on Race Course Rd. (five minutes from MRT - Little India) is great, but there%26#39;s also another one you should consider: Queen%26#39;s Tandoor in Robertson Walk (off Robertson Quay) is a lovely alfresco restaurant, facing the open piazza and the fountain... Ambience is not as ';authentic'; as in all those Little India eateries but the food is fantastic (It%26#39;s north Indian...)
Both Komala Vilas (76-78 Serangoon Road) and Dosa Corner (78 Serangoon Road) serve excellent ';Dosa'; (a south-Indian rolled crispy crêpe, stuffed with various fillings and served with different sauces and dips on the side)
You should visit the %26#39;Singapore Restaurant and Nightlife Guide%26#39; at www.metropolasia.com , they%26#39;ve got some excellent articles and reviews in there.

Thanks, Asia Travel, for the additional leads. Regarding MRT,…thanks for asking Stealeers, well, we’re just going to cab it everywhere. We’ve short-listed hotels, and it’s a toss up between Royal Plaza at Scots and the Pan Pacific, unless there’s a last minute change of plan. Cabbies should be available at both these venues.
The list I’ve prepared is thanks mainly to the invaluable info provided by the destination experts of Singapore.
So thank you, everyone.
Woody, MRT is actually simple and cheap, even with a child (provided you avoid peak hour squeeze). I think you%26#39;ll be surprised how good it is.
1. Jumbo Seafood - go to East Coast, and order the chilli crab. If you want more authentic, instead go to No Signboard Seafood. Also, Long Beach Seafood (also on East Cost) does a great black pepper crab.
3. Ponggol Choon Seng Seafood - this is MILES away
4. Lau Pau Sat (for Satay) - YES! Don%26#39;t order the seafood or cockles though, as you%26#39;ll be ripped off. Stick with the satay, and then go inside to order the rest of your food.
6. No Signboard (at Gaylang) - don%26#39;t do two chilli crabs during your visit! Do only one of the other!!!
7. Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken (Maxwell Road, food Centre) - YES, avoid peak hour though!
10. Chilli Crab at Matter Road Seafood - Gosh you%26#39;re really overdosing on chilli crab!
Tips
a. drop all the chilli crab. It%26#39;s not healthy to have that much of it.
b. Try the %26#39;Hoover Rojak%26#39; at Whampoa Hawker Centre (this one you will need to cab to. It%26#39;s about 10 min away from orchard road). Rojak is a form of Malaysian salad, made with pineapple, cucumber, prawn paste and peanuts. Go at nigt, and also have fish head steamboat. All the steamboat places at Whampoa Hawker Centre are wonderful. Very good local experience!
c. Also try Nasi Lemak and Rota Prati during your stay
Dont drop the Chilli Crab its the best , but once per visit is enough
Why not try some of the areas in the suburbs like
Balestier Road for Bah Ku teh ( they queue out of the door every night for Bah Ku teh )and Chicekn rice , many many local food places here or
Tanjong Katong for Katong Laksa and many other stalls
Both these places are not that far out
Thanks Emily, your feedback has further sharp focussed our plan.
a. Jumbo Seafood (for Chilli Crab) on East Coast
Road. That%26#39;s in the bag.
b. No Signboard...we%26#39;ll strike this one off.
c. Ponggol too far ? OK, that%26#39;s out then.
d. Chilli Crab at Matter Road...I%26#39;ve heard these
guys are kinda freaks-they shut down for 2 days
(!) just to make the Chilli Crabs. Now, if that
isn%26#39;t nutty then what is ?
e. Lau Pau Sat for Satay - yes !
f. Hoover Rojak...wow, that sounds interesting.
We%26#39;re on !
And thanks Mr. Marty88...Bak Ku Teh, now this is getting really cool. We%26#39;ll make it.
Have a great weekend everybody.
Woody
Just a correction, Tiong Bahru Market is not next to Tiong Bahru MRT station. Its some distance away, you have navigate and walk your way there.
The one which is next to it is likely be the one located at Bukit Ho Swee, HDB area, close by to MRT. The place I used to have my daily B/f some 15 yrs ago. I don%26#39;t know what it was called now as I had not been there since. Last time I psat by, it was still under renonvation.
