Alirght, I already know that with blond hair and blue eyes I%26#39;ll stick out. But are there any tricks to looking a little more like an expat and a little less like a gawking tourist?
Advice for men and women would be appreciated!
Thanks!
how not to look like a tourist?
haha... i am going to go light on you here... and please do take it with a pince of salt.....
okay... here goes...
when you are in SG, why would like to to blend into the crowd. tourists will be treated more politely, people here will be more than willing to help you with your queries(provided you ask the locals here, haha and not the foreigners) and not that the locals are so fake but we do genuinely like the tourists to leave SG with a good impression.
so, i would say, go on and enjoy yourself and be known that you are a guest in our country. you be surprise how nice we will go all out to impress you.
okay, anyway... one in four person here is a foreigner just for your knowledge...
enjoy...

Just take a good look at Stealeers%26#39; answer %26#39;cause it says it all... If there%26#39;s one country on earth where you don%26#39;t have to worry about looking like a tourist, it%26#39;s Singapore...
However... there are a few exceptions, such as Little India, Arab Street and Geylang, where a few of the traders might quote you a ';tourist'; price... Anyway, it%26#39;s not really something serious enough to worry about... just be a tourist and enjoy !
in 1 one week i go to singapore.

Don%26#39;t worry, there are thousands, if not tens of thousands of really beautiful Singaporeans, you won%26#39;t %26#39;%26#39;stick out%26#39;%26#39;, so just relax and enjoy your visit, no one will %26#39;%26#39;gawk%26#39;%26#39; at you, just be yourself. Alan.
as what stealeers has mention
1 out of 4 in singapore are foreign
Singapore present population is 4.6M million including expatriates
Now.. real breed singaporean are became minority.
Once you had a map on you, everyone know you are tourist
singapore english is call singlish.
Most statement end with a ';la';
Hi,
This is a question I always ask when travelling!
Here%26#39;s my 2 cents%26#39; worth:
Avoid wearing sandals with socks
Avoid hats. Not many expats wear hats here. Not too hot for hats, but too humid for hats.
Avoid slinging your camera around your neck.
Avoid them Hawaiian print type cotton shirts.
Batik is fine, but not made with the cheap cotton (like the Hawaiian shirt type fabric) - if locals wear them, - they usually wear them at home or to their local wet market and then again, only people of a certain generation wear them.
I dont;really know know to describe the cheap cotton...it%26#39;s got a bit of spun rayon in it as well. Extremely comfy, perfect for tropical climates, but it just screams tourist! LOL
Hi flowergirl78
Cotton T-shirt with sandal or flip flop slipper will be great .
No hat and no camera .
This place is hot and humid, just light make up will do or you will be sweating.
Simple and happy go lucky for this care free country.
At this tourist destination no body care a damn.
Cheers
jade_du gives great advice.
One thing to do is to avoid a sunburn - maybe even a tan. A sunburn is almost always a tourist than expat. Most expats lack color even.
You will always stick out as a white person. I think that it is mostly attitude - people react to you differently if you carry yourself as an expat (of course that sometimes entails knowledge and experiences over time).
In general, tourists are not taken advantage of here - and if you go to off-beaten, non-touristy areas/venues - then you will more likely get the ';authentic'; experience that you may be seeking.
:)
Quite an accomplishment to look like an expat. Even ';they'; sometimes get it wrong, especially the newbies. Example: the use of too many ';lahs'; (as explained by one poster, this expression has the roots in Singlish ... Singapore%26#39;s unique brand of English). You won%26#39;t be stared at, way too many ';white folk'; for you to stick out like a sore thumb. Population of true-blue Singaporeans are dwindling (either not reproduced or have ';defected';).
Relax and enjoy your time in Singers!
