Singapore Hotels too expensive now

Was thinking of taking a trip to Singapore, but have you seen the hotel prices?!!! I just saw in a Singapore Tourism report that hotel rooms had increased by 49.5% from 2007 to 2008! I think I%26#39;ll go elsewhere thanks.

...so far in 2009 the hotel room prices has come down by about 15% on average

Singapore Hotels too expensive now

They would need to if they want people to visit. Was talking to someone last night who was a regular visitor to Singapore but who has chosen to go to other places instead, and we are doing the same. We love Singapore but it%26#39;s become too expensive.

Minus any recession effects, Singapore is becoming more expensive in many ways. I think it is a very misguided approach to tourism - they want to focus on high-end tourism. I think OP is right; it will drive away people who may visit often and the so-called high-end tourists will disappear after a few years.

IMHO

We are shocked at how the hotel prices have increased over the last couple of years. This will probably be our last time which is such a shame. Singapore used to be very good value for money which encouraged us to do the long journey. The Sheraton for instance is 3 times the price it was 4 years ago, these are the executive rooms but now it is impossible to have these benefits and we are going for very simple room only options. I wonder how long it will take before the prices will have to be reduced further.

Surley it is all supply and demand, they wouldnt be charging high prices if there werent enough people paying the asking price. If tourist numbers drop then prices will follow. I dont think the govermnet or deparment of tourism control hotel rooms charges in Singapore. However a few years ago they released a lot of land (pretty much all land without a building on it belongs to the goverment)for new hotel construction, so there are a large number of new rooms coming on line in the next 2-3 years so I expect prices to fall somemore.

About 4,000 more rooms (including the 2,600 from the Marina Bay Sands Casino Resort) will be available next year. Yes, prices will come tumbling down... in order for hotels to fill their rooms. On average, the occupancy rate for hotels for the whole of 2008 is about 83%.

I feel that the business client will always be there but unfortunately not the tourist. Singapore will always be a stop over maybe one or two nights which is what the country was trying to get away from. There are many surrounding countries that are offering so much more for your money so Singapore will be a flying visit unless they become more competitive.

I live in the U.K but visit Singapore 3 times per year. I normally stay in the Traders hotel but this is now priced at over 100 pounds per night which is an increase of about 30% on last year. Even the Hilton on Orchard road was coming up at 140 pounds during the week but a more reasonable 88 pound per night on a weekend. It%26#39;s not just the hotels, even the food prices in the supermarkets have shot up. It will drive people away if this keeps up.

Kevin, that%26#39;s interesting about the occupancy rate, it still seems to be very high. I guess this will change as we get further into 2009. Thanks for the great info you impart regularly.

We have just returned from Singapore and this time we went to Malaysia for 7 nights of our two weeks as we couldn%26#39;t afford the hotel prices in Singapore for the whole time.

We were there in Jan 08 and prices had increased from our previous 2005 trip but when we started looking for Jan 09 the prices for 3 sent us looking else where as the prices were compounded by poor exchange rate for AUS$

We were able to fly 3 of us to KL, stay 7 nights in executive club rooms with all club facilities (all b/f, nightly cocktails %26amp; canapes etc) in both KL and Melaka, hire a car for a couple of days and travel by bus between KL-Melaka-Singapore for less than the cost of our 5 nights standard accommodation in Singapore.

Shame really as we love coming to Singapore and still enjoyed our days there so much more than being in Malaysia but we won%26#39;t be able to come back while hotel prices are so high.
