Prices of alcoholics in Singapore and Malaysia

We are leaving within three weeks to Singapore and Malaysia. We heard that alcohol in Malaysia is shockingly expensive, especially in hotels. Is this the same for Singapore? What about the supermarkets in Singapore and Malaysia? Can you just buy alcohol and how are the prices compared to here (Europe), for a bottle of wine or a bottle of gin? Does it make sense to buy two bottles of drink in Singapore and bring them to Malaysia or is just as expensive or even cheaper in the stores in Malaysia.

We look forward to your experiences.

Booze is expensive in both countries. I suggest you buy duty-free on arrival at Singapore Changi (1 litre per pax) ... SGD25 for Bombay. FYI, an average bottle of wine (one that doesn%26#39;t burn a hole in your throat!) at the supermarket in SG costs SGD25. Similar in KL costs RM70. If you go pubbing in SG, a G%26amp;T averages SGD18; in KL, RM22. Bombay in a KL supermarket costs RM120; SGD50 in SG.

Note that if you%26#39;re travelling from Malaysia into Singapore (either fly or overland), you CAN%26#39;T bring in duty-free booze.

Dear JulesB66,

Thanks for your awnser.

Is it possible to buy duty-free at Singapore airport on arrival? Here, at Amsteram airport you can only buy duty-free when you have a valid boarding pass.

Do you have any idea of the prices of a bottle of Bacardi or a bottle of Gorden%26#39;s gin at Singapore airport, Singapore supermarkets and Malaysian supermarkets?

It%26#39;s our first time in this region and we realy have no idea about the prices of alcoholics. Normally we buy a bottel of gin at the airport and mix it with gin or orange in our hotel room. But for three weeks it will be a lot of extra luggage.

Thanks, CeesTT

Hi CeesTT At a few airports inc LHR T5 there is a small duty free before you go landside.

Dear Ian480,

What do you mean by: ';inc LHR T5';?

Yes you can buy on arrival at Singapore Changi (as I mentioned in my earlier post).

Gordons costs SGD22 at the airport (don%26#39;t attempt to bring in more than 1litre per person); SGD50 in the supermarket. Barcardi will be more or less the same.

I think what the other poster meant with LHR T5 is ';London Heathrow, Terminal 5';. But I%26#39;m guessing you%26#39;re flying from AMS Schipol.

CeesTT I was giving london as example,I have see duty free in other airports as you get off the plane but I cannot remember which ones.

Dear JulesB66 and ian480,

Thanks again. Your tips are very helpful. Because of the huge price difference the best for us is to buy on arrival at Singapore Airport. The other option was to buy at Dubai airport where we make a stop-over but this way we don%26#39;t have to take the bottles into the airplane. So we will buy 2 x 1 litre of gin or rhum.

Thanks again, CeesTT

All I will say is Alcohol in Malaysia and Singapore is very very expensive, that is why we opt for benefits which give you free cocktails it is worth every penny. We usually buy drink at Heathrow and take it with us, we have also bought alcohol in Langkawi and bought it back to Singapore I am sure can you explain why you can%26#39;t now bring alcohol from Malaysia is this a new ruling.

I know when we leave Singapore to go to Thailand the alcohol is very cheap at the budget terminal.

Noodlesetc: The ';no duty free alcohol'; rule in SG is not new. Signs at the 2nd Link/Causeway clearly states what%26#39;s prohibited. Flying into SG from Malaysia does make carrying booze a little easier but frankly I won%26#39;t take that risk ... would be too embarrassing especially as a Singaporean to break that law ;) ... and I%26#39;m law-abiding.

You%26#39;ve been lucky .....
