Will I miss my flight?

I am going to Amsterdam via Singapore on 23/01/09, 10.50pm. I will go from KL to Singapore by Air Asia, there are two flights which reach Singapore Airport 5.50pm and 8.50pm.

If I take the Air Asia which reach Singapore at 8.50pm, will I have enough time to check in the KLM flight to Amsterdam? Do I need to check out at custom then re-check in, how long time it will take for me to done at custome? Or I can get off from Air Asia flight then directly rush to KLM check in counter?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Will I miss my flight?

Hi Isw

Strongly suggest to take the arrival 5.50pm flight.

The airasia plane arrive at Changi 1,you need to physically retrive your luggages, clear custom, immigration and get into Changi??? 1?.2? or 3? for KLM flight.

Check in to get boarding pass from KLM counter(which terminal?)and clear immigration all which will required some time.

You also need to buffer in for flight delay from KL to Singapore.

Would suggest for an earlier flight(5.50pm) for ease of mind

Will I miss my flight?

better do the 5.50pm flight otherwise it is too tight

you don%26#39;t need to clear immigration since it land at Terminal 1, you can move between the 3 terminals within the transit areas. but I think you still need to collect your luggage and check in for your Amsterdam flight

changiairport.com/changi/鈥3

Oh, yes! I totally forgot we have to collect the luggage first.

Ok, I think the Air Asia from KL should be arrived at Terminal 1? Then the KLM depart for Amsterdam also in Terminal 1, will I have enough time if I want to take the 8.50pm arrived flight?

What is the whole process for me to get off from Air Asia flight till I board the KLM? (sorry for this stupid question as I never use transit before)

Thank you in advance for your help.

- Mint -

1) You should take the 5.50pm flight. The 8.50pm flight is too risky should AirAsia be delayed. It will be too stressful.

2) Yes, both flights operate out of Terminal 1.

3) After you arrive, clear immigration, collect luggage, clear customs. Go up 1 level to the Departure Hall, check the display boards for your KLM flight check-in counter. Proceed to check-in counter. However, it may not be open for check-in at 6:30pm. You can take your time for the whole process if your AirAsia flight arrives on schedule.

Leopang, Crescentra, Kevin,

Thank you very much for all of your info. I have first plan to take the 5.50pm flight, just thought if I have chance to save 1 day annual leave :p

Now have no choice, as you say for peace of mind... 5.50pm is the best choice.

Would you also help me - instead of walking and visiting Changi airport till departure, is there any place I can go for dinner (foodcourt), shopping eg Tampines (I think this is the nearest place to airport?) for a short period or you think stay in Changi airport is enough to kill time?

p/s: is the MRT station is operate in Changi airport already?

- Mint -

I found the other topic which discuss about foodcourt/hawker center near airport. Please ignore my question.

Thank you.

- Mint -

MRT station has operate in Changi airport..

It is @ T2

Thanks pikarat, then is easier for me to have dinner in Bedok! If I%26#39;m not mistake, there is a nice fried KuewTeoh, have to double confirm with friends first.

Thank you.

- Mint -

If u taken MRT..

just right outside Bedok MRT, there is a hawker centre..

alot of good food there..

just go for the longest Q..

:D

If u reach Bedok during noon time.. u can walk to Blk 216 hawker centre..

Don%26#39;t miss the coffee.. forever long Q.

actually I don%26#39;t think you have that much time, personally I would not get too far from the airport

you reach singapore at 7pm and clearing immigration and recheck-in would take you to close to 8pm and you have to board at 10.30pm? 2.5hrs is probably what you have, it rather tight, unless you have never experienced a hawker center. I would not take any chances to miss the flight

the airport is huge and enough things to occupy, and free internet terminals

  • Best sunday brunch?

We are going to Singapore and would like to have brunch, but where?

I have read a lot about Mezza 9 and Four Seasons, but how about The Ritz Carlton? I had brunch there in Shanghai and thought the food was excellent, but the environment was not that nice.

Has anybody been to all three in Singapore?

I would really appreciate info and your oppinions on them!

And if anybody by chance has suggestions on where to have really good sushi, that would be much appreciated too...

    Thank You,

    Hanna

    Best sunday brunch?

Ritz has a pretty good brunch but coz they serve Moet %26amp; Chandon (at least it was this brand when I had my brunch last time and the one before that) as it is a champange brunch, u will find it crowded with expats and by the end of it, u will find it too noisy even after the brunch is over (the crowd may move over to the lounge area across from the restaurant and party continues from there).

At Four Seasons, it is VCV so even more upmarket :) and again, good food and definitely more dignified atmosphere.

    Other brunches :

Hilton - great for those with kids but food still good without :)

Marina Mandarin - they normally served brunch at Aquamarine

    Raffles - Billiard Room

Conrad - Oscar%26#39;s (i like the atmosphere with Jazz)

Fullerton - Pierside or Town Rest. both serving (Town offers more)

Shangri La - my favorite for brunch at the Line

Sentosa Spa %26amp; Resort - most costly brunch serving Duval Leroy and starts later than most brunches (u r paying for cost of champagne, if u want the most choices and quality, go for Shangri La%26#39;s The Line)

    good luck

    Best sunday brunch?

Have tried several brunches in Singapore and nothing comes close to te Equinox Sunday Brunch. Endless Moet, top shelf spirits, beers and cocktails are all included in the price. The views are to die for. The service impeccable and the food Oh My God!!!

We fly up to singas 3 times a year just for sunday brunch. (Well not just for brunch, but you know what i mean)

    Thank you!

We are staying at The Shangri-La in the Valley Wing, and thought that it might be nice to go somewhere else since we most likely will be dining there one night or two..

So, Four Seasons is the place that I hear the most positive things about. If the food is as good as the champagne, that%26#39;s where we will go!

And, lucky you to come to Singapore so often just to have brunch! I wish it was a little bit closer to Sweden. But we have visited Bangkok many, many times just, well almost, for the food!

    Thanks both of you again!

    Hanna

Can you take children to the brunch at Equinox, you cannot take them to that restaurant in the evening.

    Ref Kids at Equinox brunch.

I recall seeing a room just off the restraunt that is for kids. I could be wrong, best to email them.

    cheers

    Hi,

I would suggest the Ritz Carlton Greenhouse for Sunday brunch.

Mezza9 is better for lunch or dinner (go to the Martini Bar for drinks - best martinis in town!) and the Four Seasons I would recommend only at Christmas time.

Not to say Four Seasons isn%26#39;t great - it is! But brunch is usually at a really airy enviro but the Four Seasons is completely enclosed in an airconditioned space, with little outdoor area.

Other places you can try are:-

Graze - a modern Australian style place at the West side. www.graze.sg

Alternatively, you can try Marmalade Pantry (1. Palais Renaissance, Orchard Road 2. Holland Village. The other 2 places are shut on the weekends as they are in the business districts)

If you%26#39;re willing to travel, you can head to a place called Wild Rocket.

Heard good reviews there but I%26#39;ve tried the rest and they are tried and tested!

    Good luck!

    Hi I forgot to add.

You can also try Conrad International%26#39;s Oscar%26#39;s.

Oscar%26#39;s has a really nice buffet brunch or a la carte but I do believe it%26#39;s quite famous. They used to do Veuve Clicquot brunches at Easter but not too sure whether it is a long-term thing.

Good luck and do enjoy it all!!! :)

bump (sorry for reviving this post).

I did Sunday Brunches at Ritz and FS before and dinner/lunch buffets at almost all the top grade hotels in Singapore.

Do Not go to FS for Sunday Brunch, please. It must have some drugs or whatever because after going there for first time we developed cravings and had to return continuouly for once a month. Did not feel that urge for Ritz since I am able to resist it. Happened to 2 other families I know of too. (Imagine the amount of money they swindled).

I normally do not go for starchy food on buffets but after tasting my companions%26#39; risotto, crepes, pasta I am convinced there must be some sinister things in those that FS serves up. My weakness for foie gras, mojito, oysters, organic vegs and great grilled lamb etc didn%26#39;t help the addiction. The environment for FS is not the light early morning feel so it%26#39;s really the food. For those who want to dump their kids, FS encourages you to dump them at a kid%26#39;s playroom upstairs. Bouncing castle, cartoons on TV, sculpted balloons, tattoos, dozens of nannies, loads of kid food etc. tsk tsk. They put a spell and your kid actually FORGETS you.

For usual dinner buffet, The Line at Shangri-La will do. Less costly and their magic is limited to maybe 4-5 times a year, or at least that%26#39;s the amount of magic they cast on me.

Anymore from these two places I would need to go cold turkey or sign up for some diet clinic.

4S rules their brunch is amongst the best i tried anywhere on this planet.......

also the chinese at 4s have the best peking duck i had so far, wnet there with friends who had lives in Hong Kong, thsy where totally amazed.

Just done a search to find the best brunch and found this. Can anyone please tell me if the FS is a Champ. Bruch.

We have done Raffles and Fullerton - thought Fullerton was much better. Now looking at best for 09

    Thanks

    Any Marina Mandarin drawbacks?

I booked 6 nights at Marina Mandarin at Expedia as a package deal with flight from Dusseldorf, Germany. I think €88/night is a real bargain. As I had a terrible time few years ago at Peninsula Excelsior, I hope this hotel to be much better. Any comments?

    Any Marina Mandarin drawbacks?

there is definitely a huge difference in MM v PE. MM is a 5* while PE is a 3* (rating a 4* is a bit far fetched but this is coz they do have the facilites but doesnt mean the quality or services r at that star rating)

Enjoy ur stay at MM !

    Any Marina Mandarin drawbacks?

I am also going to be staying at MM and by all accounts from the many reviews on here weve chosen an excellet hotel ..

If you found that deal online, mind posting the site :)?

    %26lt;%26lt; If you found that deal online, mind posting the site :)? %26gt;%26gt;

Thay already did, it%26#39;s a package deal through expedia.

Am staying at MM next month. Booked as part of Singapore Airlines stopover package. Might be worth looking at if you%26#39;re flying SIA.

Palau Ubin, Chek Jawa, Sungei Buloh

Hi! I%26#39;ve got a 3.5-day trip in Singapore, and one place I%26#39;d like to spend time is Palau Ubin. Our (me + g/f) plan is to rent bikes to go around the island some, and go to Chek Jawa. Has anyone been to these places?

I%26#39;m trying to get an idea of how much time to allot to this part of our journey. I guess we%26#39;ll only spend a couple of hours biking. How much time should I leave to Chek Jawa? We will be doing the self-tour (guided tours are booked already).

Has anyone been to the Sungei Buloh Wetlands? Worth checking out if we are already going to Chek Jawa (which I believe has some wetlands too)? How much time for that?

Any other tips and recommendations for Palau Ubin?

Is there anywhere to eat on the island? We might go in the morning and stay until the afternoon.

    THANKS!

Palau Ubin, Chek Jawa, Sungei Buloh

Not sure that I can be a great deal of help but for what it is worth we have been to Pulau Ubin.

We often stop off in Singapore on trips to Europe. We sometimes stay at Changi Village as we are not into shopping!!

It is easy to catch a ferry from Changi Village to Pulau Ubin. Boats go when they are full so not to a timetable. They will check your bags when you come back into Changi Village port but nothing serious.

I don%26#39;t ride bikes (I never learnt!) but there are plenty on offer. There are food stalls etc and it is a lovely break from the hustle %26amp; bustle of Singapore.

Can%26#39;t advise about Chek Jawa as I%26#39;m not sure whether we went there. We just caught a bum boat from Changi Village to Pulau Ubin, had a nice walk round, went back to the wharf %26amp; waited a while for a boat to go back to Changi Village.

The weather was pleasant but that is about early September but seemed cooler than Singapore itself.

    Good Luck,

    Anne.

Palau Ubin, Chek Jawa, Sungei Buloh

Thanks for your help, Anne! Seems like time is easily managed at Pulau Ubin...

For anyone else out there... just to get a better understanding of how to handle Pulau Ubin, seems like I can bike around the island easily. And then cycle back to Chek Jawa, lock my bike up and walk around that reserve. Is that right?

I%26#39;m setting a pretty crazy schedule for us -- Sentosa (Underwater World/Dolphins), Sungei Buloh Wetlands, Night Safari one day; Pulau Ubin/Chek Jawa the next. Is that animal/nature overload??

Does anyone who has been to both think that I should pick ONLY Sungei Buloh or Chek Jawa? Any preference on which?

    Thanks!

    Singapore versus Hong Kong

I wanted to follow up on a thread that I read a while back on the Hong Kong Trip Advisor forum. The topic concerned a comparison of Hong Kong as a friendly, compelling tourist destination with other destinations (cities) in Asia. I took special notice of the comments regarding Singapore.

As I recall, the comparison was that (in general) the tourist experience in Singapore was slightly different from that in Hong Kong.

Anyone care to compare/contrast their personal experience in Hong Kong versus Singapore. I am interested because I have been to Hong Kong recently, and I am planning a trip to Singapore.

Also, honestly, because Singapore is a relatively expensive travel destination based upon the cost of hotels and restaurants (with 17% add on for taxes and service charge), I am deciding if the stop is worth it or not.

    Singapore versus Hong Kong

    hey tommy

since you have such a negative view about singapore. i think no matter how hard the sell by us to you, will only be met with more sceptism.

unless you look at a holiday to singapore or any destination(expensive or cheap) with a open mind, it will kind of difficult to sell that destination to you.

maybe, like you say.... whether the stop here is worth it or not is up to you to decide.

    Singapore versus Hong Kong

Didn%26#39;t think that the OP was very negative. :)

I%26#39;ve never been to HK but visited SIN a few times.

I found hotels in Singapore expensive and was deceived a couple of times by mid-range hotels.

Otherwise I didn%26#39;t find Singapore expensive: taxis and public transport services are affordable.

Restaurants in touristy areas can be expensive but I prefer to go to food courts for a cheap and tasty meal (3-4 SGD). Beers and alcohol are more expensive.

So except for hotels, I do not consider SIN as an expensive destination at all :)

    Hi Tommy190,

Last year I did a long overseas trip and spent a week in Singapore on the way out, and a week in Hong Kong on the way home to Australia. I have been going to both destinations regularly over the past 20 years. Singapore hotel costs have increased so much over the years. But its tourist attractions, transport system, cleanliness, shopping options have been enhanced and increased. I love Singapore and its history and culture. I want to go back soon, the only thing halting me is the ever rising hotel costs.

Last year I found Hong Kong over-developed and had lost a lot of its local asian/chinese culture and look. A lot of those areas had been demolished to make way for glass and steel shopping malls. The Kowloon area had been cleaned up since my previous visit (that time I found it grotty). I found Causeway Bay and Central area bland, though I always love the ride over the harbour on the Star Ferry.

Both destinations have their charms, but my favourite is Singapore.

    Denise,

Thanks for your thoughtful response! :)

    Tommy190

Hi Tommy, I havent been to HongKong but I have been visiting Singapore for over 20 years. I agree with the other people about hotels have become expensive (especially when there is a major event like F1 week), but other costs are still relatively affordable ie. food and transport. You can still find bargains with shopping. One thing about Singapore, the people are friendly and it has to be one of the safest cities around. We recently experienced major, major crowds at Orchard Rd on Christmas eve, where in some areas it was tight squeeze to walk along the footpath. Not once, did we experience any aggressive behaviour, everyone just took it in their stride!

had lived in both cities and still visit both on an annual basis.

If u have already been to HK (btw, HK island and Kowloon and the islands all have different feel to the towns so experiences vary depending on where u go), why dont u give SIN a try ?

SIN is like a blend of CA and NY while HK (island) is just like NY. Both have fun places to visit and depending on what u r looking for, it can be anything from costly to cheap. If u r not fussy, u can find reasonable places to stay in SIN.

    Have fun.

  • Durians in season?

We saw a couple of stalls selling durians the other day and was wondering whether it is in season again? The durians from Malaysia are normally in season in the middle of the year. If durians are in season again, do you know whether Geylang is selling them now? And where are these durians from?

    Durians in season?

its already a thing of the past where in season, you will only find durians. Its all year round mostly still coming from MY. I would only prefer to eat durians during the usual season especially mid yr. Not even Dec as they are not the best, much less the rest of the time when it is still on sales. They are hardly the best though you may be tempted to try. I would rather wait.

    Durians in season?

There are about 4 durian sellers set up along Balestier Rd, all with their outdoor seating at the moment. It may not be the season, but they%26#39;ve got stock for sure. I%26#39;m not sure what kinds though.

    Breakfast in Singapore? (updated address)

We are going to Singapore in the end of January and we are staying at Hotel Penisula Excelsior (Coleman street no.5) and the breakfast is not included during our vacation. Later we saw that the breakfast cost S$28++ per person. From my point of view it is rather much for just a breakfast.

Can anyone suggest any place near the hotel where they are serving breakfast for better price. Or is S$28 ordinary in Singapore for a breakfast?

    Thanks in advance,

    Peter

    Breakfast in Singapore? (updated address)

S$28 for breakfast is extremely expensive. But it would be the price for a hotel buffet breakfast and is usually meant for tourists.

The usual very local breakfast cost about S$3 per person at a hawker centre or coffee shop.

    Breakfast in Singapore? (updated address)

opp your hotel. There is Funan Centre

Inside there, it has supermarket, restaurant, fast food centre, etc..

    Can refer to http://www.funan.com.sg/stores_b1.htm

    for more information

$28++ per person for breakfast is very very expensive.

U can go to level 1, try Ya Kun Kaya Toast.

I think the set meal only less than $4 or $5 per person. No ++

Must try the toast, half-boil egg and coffee

Yes, Funan is just a building away, more like besides or behind your hotel. I think there is also a MacDonald there too.

If you don%26#39;t mind a little further down, take a bus down to Chinatown for breakfast. Take your bus near to City Hall MRT station. You will see the bus stop as it is less than 5 min from your hotel (background, St Andrew Cathedral). There should be signboard at the stops indicating where buses are heading. If not, just ask around how to go Chinatown. There are numerous buses going that way. I think its mere 4 or 5 stops away (5 min ride). Alight near the Indian temple or the Chinese temple you won%26#39;t miss it as they are prominent features and tourist attraction

Then you can either choose to eat at Maxwell market or Chinatown (???, can%26#39;t remember the name, just behind the Buddhist%26#39;s Tooth Relic Temple). They are just facing each other separated by a road (South Bridge Road)

Thank you all for your information. Now we are looking forward to eat breakfast in Singapore.

    Peter

We stayed at peninsula about 3 years ago and there was a burger king across the road and a bakery of some kind between hotel and city hall MRT which we always walked to. The hotel breakfast was included in our price and it was fantastic and we never needed lunch.

  • Apt/Hotel Extended Stay

Does anyone know if there are any apartment/hotel rental for extended stay visitor in Singapore? I am going to be staying in Singapore in February for possibly up to 2 months. Most apartments rental need to sign a lease for a year and nothing short term. I obviously would not like to stay in a hotel for 2 months. Preferably something like in North America where we have apartment/hotel type setting with little kitchennette, laundry, etc.

    Any thoughts.

    Buffet with kids

    Hi

We have two kids who love eating buffets. Any recommendations on a good meal out for a reasonable price around the Clarke Quay area?

    Buffet with kids

Elenborough Market Cafe at Swisshotel Merchant court (this is medium priced, and in Clarke Quay area).

For kids, two other moderately price and fun options (not at Clarke Quay, but around Orhard and Marina) are:

Sakura buffet (buffet with a japanese emphasis and lots of healthy dessert)

    www.sukigroup.com.sg/website/sakura.htm

Yuki Yuki (steamboat and teppankai buffet)

Neither of these have the classiest food, but they%26#39;re kid friend.

    Yuki Yuki sounds good!

    Help!!! Singapore in 1 day

Hi, Im planing a 1-day stop over in Singapore. Pretty sure I will arrive Changi @ 7am and will leave again the next morning. I%26#39;m planning to stay the night @ the airport hotel so i can get back as late as i wanted to.Plan during the day is to do the zoo and/or Escape theme park during the day with shopping at Velocity mall and Raffle mall and go to night safari at night (a plenty of time to get back to airport then).I will go with my 11-years old sister and she%26#39;s quite travel-worthy (we did big day and night trip before so tireness is not a problem).Need to know if the trip is possible transport-wise.I was thinking if i do the zoo at 8.30-11, escape theme park to 3, a bit of shopping til 7, i should be able to get back to night safari at 8. But of course I don%26#39;t know if I have allowed enough time for transport (even if by taxi). Pls let me know travel time to each place (both by MRT, bus and taxi) and cost by taxi(i won%26#39;t be able to use my phone so where do i get taxi when i wanted to)

Any help would be very much appreciated

    Help!!! Singapore in 1 day

    Hi oki-nichan,

Your plan is possible, but only by taxi, because zoo and night safari is out of the way, take long time by MRT or bus. So you must be ready to pay a much higher price for transport because the airport, escape theme park and Tampines mall are close to one another, but far from the zoo and night safari. My estimation and suggestion:

7.00 am arrive at Changi airport

    8.00 am check-in hotel

8.30 am leave airport by taxi (about $10)

9.00 am arrive at escape theme park zoo

9.00-11.00 am rides in escape theme park

11.00 pm leave by taxi to Tampines mall (less than $10)

    11.30-2.00 pm lunch and shopping

2.00 pm taxi to zoo (about $30)

    3.00-6.00 pm zoo

6.00 pm dinner at night safari

    7.00-9.00 pm night safari

9.00 pm. leave by taxi (about $30)

    10.00 pm arrive at hotel

    Hope this helps.

    Help!!! Singapore in 1 day

Thank you very much, your help was very much appreciated.I%26#39;ve been thinking over the time frame and found that it%26#39;s probably too tight and not as enjoyable then for my sister.

Should I drop the theme park? how is it compared to the zoo? (im thinking not as good as the zoo could be, with the animal rides and such, but i%26#39;ve never been there). How long would you stay in the zoo to enjoy it? (Plus I want to spend a bit more time shopping and sight seeing as well - it%26#39;s a shame that we can%26#39;t stay longer). So pls advise if my changes to the old schedule is made

    7am: Arrived @ Changi

    8am:Take taxi to zoo.

    8.30am:Arrival.Have breakfast with orangutan.

    11am:Leave zoo

11.30: Arrive at Velocity@Novena (need to do some sports gear shopping, any other shop recommended there other than the usual nike, adidas?)

3pm:Get to Raffle city (by MRT%26#39;s probably the best way). Any shop recommended (clothing and toys)for price and style?

What other place Should i try to fit in schedule? anything kids would be interested in?

    7.30pm:Leave for night safari

10.30pm.Leave zoo.Might try MRT and bus.Any recommended route?

    Thanks heaps

    oki-nichan,

The Zoo and Night Safari is nearby, would suggest that you do them together, i.e. visit the Zoo in the late afternoon then have your dinner and continue with the Safari.

You can head back to your hotel after the Night Safari.

If you are short of time, I would suggest you give ESCAPE Theme Park a miss. Its pretty small if you compared with that of those in the States or even in Australia.

For shopping, you can try VIVO City, Spore%26#39;s largest mall and accessible via MRT.

The sports gear you meantioned in another thread can be found in Vivo too.

As for Roxy and the other Aussie brands, I dont%26#39; think they are cheaper here since we have to import them. It could be more expensive than back home due to the exchange rate.

Do have an enjoyable time in Spore.

Thanks for the reply. That schedule would certainly be easier. But I really want my sister to attend the breakfast with orangutan so the morning would probably be the best. How far is it from the airport to the zoo? and from raffle to the zoo?

Close to 45 mins by taxi. Would not recommend you taking MRT and bus back to hotel, as it will take close to 1.5-2 hours (bus 138 to Ang Mo Kio bus interchange, walk across to Ang Mo Kio MRT station, take south-bound train to Raffles City, change to East-bound train, change at Tenah Merah station to go to Changi airport station. Unless you don%26#39;t mind going back so late, not that it is unsafe, but that you have to make sure you don%26#39;t miss the last train which is around midnite.

The flight arrival at the different terminals are according to airline. What airline are you travelling on? There are sky train connecting the three terminals, no hassle at all, very convenient. No worry, you are at one of the best airport in the world! Relax and enjoy.

    Terminal for flight from Frankfurt

The 3 terminal are in reality just 1 very big terminal, there are no physical divisions that define where one terminal finishes and the other starts. They are only really given numbers to help passengers navigate around the airport and help you identify where the check in desks for your airline is located. Because of the way it is laid out, sometimes the distance to be covered is greater if you land and take of from the same terminal than if you leave from the neighbouring one. It take about 15min to walk between the 2 furthest points, or 3-5min if you take the Shytain. If you flying in on Singapore airlines, the plane may land at different terminals for each flight, depending on where that particular plane is due to fly off next.

So basically, dont worry about it!

  • Best way to see Singapore?

In this ';Save My Feet'; campaign, I%26#39;m looking for the best way to see a clump of sites without killing my feet for the rest of my trip.

The following places are all within a 2 km radius... but to walk all that and hit most of these spots equates to 10+km. Doesn%26#39;t seem like THAT much, but each day of my trip will have lots of walking.

Little India, Ritz-Carlton, War Memorial Park, Esplanade Park, Peranakan Museum, Merlion Park, Fort Canning Park, Singapore National Library, Elgin Bridge, The Arts House, Parliament House, Raffles Hotel, Chijmes, St. Andrew%26#39;s Cathedral, Clarke Quay

I want to rent a bicycle to cut down on the time between points... but...

    - we can%26#39;t bike on on sidewalks

    - sounds like biking on streets is dangerous in Singapore

    - most bike shops aren%26#39;t in the area (starting around Bugis)

Any suggestions on alternative ways to get around those places? Would love to rent a razor/scooter, but somehow I don%26#39;t think those would be allowed either.

Also, what%26#39;s the best place to see Singapore from an elevated height (aside from Sky Tower)? Somewhere I can take some nice pictures of the city or skyline. Or even some good photography points of the city from ground level.

Thank you in advance for any answers.... :D

    - Kevin

    Best way to see Singapore?

Get yourself an ezilink MRT card (for the trains and buses) and you%26#39;ll be fine. The trains come every few minutes and stop everywhere... there are train stations calles little india, china town, raffles, clarke quay, etc so you%26#39;ll get to just about everywhere you want on a train in a few minutes.

View Singapore from the are - there is also the big ferris wheel thing (I forget the name, but it%26#39;s a bit like those big wheels in london, paris, et) - it has just been closed for rennovations, but may reopen soon. This has a great view of the skyline, and moves slow enough to take photos.

    Best way to see Singapore?

Thanks! My main concern with busing is that the places on my list seem too closely clustered to bus between them. Here%26#39;s a map I created in Google Maps and you can zoom into the main part of Singapore. Most locations are less than 300m away from the next.

    http://maps.google.com/maps/ms? hl=en%26amp;ie=UTF8%26amp;oe=UTF8%26amp;msa=0%26amp;msid=116442473529445188990.0004601fce07d525b6c5f%26amp;ll=1.298121,103.855777%26amp;spn=0.026729,0.04549%26amp;z=15

(remove the space after ';http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?'; to make the link work (tripadvisor has a limit on the length of a word on the forums)

But lining up one point to the next makes it a long walk.

If money is not an issue, book a taxi for a few hours. There are taxi drivers who are also guides. Or else take MRT and buses, and if you are worried that there are no bus stops in such a short distance, then cover your points of interest not consecutively, but cris-crossing. (i.e. instead of A, B, C, D, E, F, you can do A, D, F, B, E, C). But then you need to have accurate information of the bus and MRT routes.

Thanks! I did a tried to increase efficiency of this trip and reduce walking by doing some re-planning, taxiing a little, MRTing, and possibly busing. I%26#39;ve also taken some places and put them on other days to not try to see too much at a time.

    Transtar bus to KL

Can anyone tell me where the transtar first class bus to KL leaves from?

    Thanks

    Transtar bus to KL

It could be the Golden Mile Complex (most likely for first class) or the Lavendar bus terminal. You%26#39;re best to check with them:

    http://www.transtar.com.sg/contact.php

    Transtar bus to KL

enjoy your trip. this is one of the better long distance bus companies. Our family certainly had a great ride, with only I think 16 passengers in the bus. I don%26#39;t think you would do what I stupidly did on that ride, which is to forget to carry my own luggage out for the customs check at the Checkpoint!

I will check where it leaves from when I book but was just curious.

Does anyone know how strict they are with luggage sizes? Their website says 55cm x 35cm x 25cm but our cases are bigger than that. We will only have 3 cases between 5 of us though.

    Hi

The bus company do not bother much on luggage sizes, the measurement given are for guide line only.

The luggage compartment had ample space for luggage.

    Cheers

Thanks for that. It puts my mind at ease a bit. I would hate to have to limit my shopping!!!

Just as Leopang had mentioned, its only a reference. I used their luxury coach before, I am from a family of 5, each of my kids (3 of them) had their own small trolley bag, I carried one hand luggage, a medium size backpack, and a I think 32'; trolley bag with us.

Most of the travellers are mainly locals who travel light and won%26#39;t have that much baggage with them. So there are ample space in the coach to housed everything including excesses.

Not sure where you%26#39;re staying in KL but the location of your hotel makes the choice of the bus an important one. You may be aware that cabs in KL are notorious for over-charging tourists (some quote as much as RM40 for a 5 min ride with the excuse that bad traffic makes them loose money). I would also suggest that you avoid the Puduraya bus terminal or Pasarakyat terminal at all costs (reason above).

If you%26#39;re staying near KLCC or Bukit Bintang, you should consider either Aeroline (www.aeroline.com.my) which stops at Corus Hotel on Jalan Ampang or Odyssey (www.odysseynow.com.my) which stops at Avenue K (also on Jalan Ampang). I%26#39;ve used both these services on my frequent trips back to my hometown and find them excellent! As an expat in KL, I avoid Puduraya like the plague!

We are going to Singapore 20th of January and because of that we are curious about the weather condition. How is it weatherforecast right now and how is the weather this time of the year?

    Thanks in advance

    Peter

    Weather in Singapore

Hot and humid, as it is most of the year. Temperatures probably around 28*C during the daytime. But, bring a jacket, because air con in the shopping malls is almost freeeeeezing in comparison at 15*C.

It%26#39;s supposed to be wet season at the moment, but the rain has been only very occasional.

Thank you Emily.... for your reply, looking forward visiting Singapore, even the shopping malls with more clothes on.

    Peter

We are used to UK weather and we shop in the Malls in Singapore with shorts and vest tops, it is not that cold anywhere in Singapore, maybe some restaurants a little chilly but nothing to worry about

Thank you for the comments on the weather - Im heading to Singapore this Thursday for the first time. Really excited!!!

Where to buy a Ipod Touch Apple in Singapore

Can anyone recommend a good and reliable electronic shop where I could buy and Apple Ipod Touch.I saw a newspaper article stating that a 8gb would be around $248 and the exchange rate against the pound, that works well for the Brits. Thanks!

Where to buy a Ipod Touch Apple in Singapore

Its S$388 in Apple stores (you can get tax back at the airport) , I cant imagine it will be much cheaper elsewhere in Singapore. With the £ devaulved by nearly 30% to the S$ in recent months, I cant imagine you%26#39;ll find any sort of branded electronic product significantly cheaper to make it worthwhile buying in Singapore at the moment.

Where to buy a Ipod Touch Apple in Singapore

Thanks Mankster for your reply, what is tax % in SIN ?

Goods and Services Tax (GST) back at the airport is 5% - but you must show a GST receipt, your passport and the goods purchased.

Anywhere in Funan would be the best place to look. Two friends recently bought ipods from Song Brothers on the second level.

is it safe to buy in Funan and can i get a GST receipt if i decided to buy an Apple Ipod Touch? Thanks!

I%26#39;ll second the %26#39;be careful its not a good time to be doing this from the UK%26#39; idea. Check how much the item costs in the UK before going to SIngapore and make sure you know how much they are charging you there.

In my experience over the last 20odd years there is no guarantee of electronics being cheaper in Singapore - sometimes the release schedules are different so I have got things there that were not available in the UK, CDs and DVDs I used to find to be cheaper though the proliferation of internet shops like play and amazon have made that less of an option, computer stuff varies immensely. You can ind bargains, but there should be no assumption that its cheap. Add to that the fact that I was buying Sing Dollars last May at 2.8 to the pound and last week I was seeing buying rates of 2.1 then things have got worse.

    Also the refund scheme requires a number of bits of paperwork, the item must be on your person for inspection at the airport (either before going airside for bulky items or in handbaggage for lighter ones claimed airside) and on occasion I have found they require the goods to be unopened for claiming back the GST - to satisfy the %26#39;not wholly or partially consumed in Singapore%26#39;

Here is the homepage for the Scheme

    Phone in Singapore

My husband and I will be in Singapore for a month, he for work and me for fun. What are the mobile phone options for us? He has AT%26amp; T service that works in many parts of the world, but did not work when he was in South Korea.

Will his American phone work there? I have Sprint, so I know mine won%26#39;t. What%26#39;s our best bet? Rent phones? Buy disposable phones and purchase minutes?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Phone in Singapore

i%26#39;m not sure if your husband%26#39;s phone will work in Singapore or not, but our mobile network technology include GSM, GPRS, UTMS, HSDPA (hehe...i%26#39;m not sure what they meant either, generally most of us are on the GSM network).

there are 3 major telco with pre-paid mobile card services: SingTel (…singtel.com/consumer/…default.asp), StarHub (starhub.com/portal/…) and M1 (m1.com.sg/M1/…) and a company known as SunPage (http://www.sunpage.com.sg/index.htm). you may wish to purchase a cheap phone here and here%26#39;s a good website to get a feel of phone prices (www.hardwarezone.com.sg/priceguide/cat.php…)

    hope the above helps.

    Phone in Singapore

Thanks for your help. I will check out those sites. His work may provide him with a phone, but I will need one as I will be off my myself much of the time.

I will have many more questions over the next few weeks, so I appreciate all imput.

I am so excited for my first trip to Asia and Singapore.

you%26#39;re welcome, most of us are more than happy to help if we%26#39;re able to, just ask. :)

    Sorry...I appreciate all INPUT...duh!

Since your husband already has a GSM phone, make sure it works on 900 %26amp; 1800 MHz frequencies. You can look up the specs of the phone model on the web. Also important is whether the phone is already unlocked or whether it is easy to do so. I think CDMA, rather than GSM, is dominant in South Korea, like in the US.

I purchased two unlocked quad-band GSM phones on eBay for $11 each. These were an old model, but since I don%26#39;t have GSM cell phone service in the US, I didn%26#39;t want to spend too much money on phones that wouldn%26#39;t work here. I%26#39;m planning to buy SIM cards from SingTel when I arrive in Singapore. The prepaid ones are called hi!Cards, available at SingTel%26#39;s hello! stores (cute names, eh?), 7-11s %26amp; post offices. You%26#39;ll need your passport to register.

Adding minutes is called ';topping up';, and there are many methods of doing so, including by ATM. The first time has to be done through a Top Up Card, which you can buy when you get the SIM card. If you%26#39;re going to travel around Asia, you can bring Top Up Cards with you, or add minutes in other Asian countries at a Bridge Prepaid Service Counters. Although it might be cheaper to get SIM cards in those countries too. Singtel charges S$6/min. for international roaming in Vietnam, for example.

There%26#39;s a comparison of the major Singapore cell phone prepaid plans at guidemesingapore.com/singapore-life/c565-pre…

Your response was most helpful. I will look into purchasing the phone prior to arrival as you did.

    Thank you so much.

    Camera stores

    Hi Peter,

For electronic equipment, Sim Lim Square at Rochor Road is a good place to browse as there%26#39;s quite a few shops all in one area.

But you have to do your homework and know the prices of the models you are getting beforehand so you can better negotiate with the vendors and know if the shop is trying to rip you off. Eg, they may sell you at a lower price but keep the accessories like spare battery, camera case, extra lens %26amp; then charge you extra on all the small items.

Just behind Hotel Peninsula Ex, there is this BIG Funan Digital mall %26amp; many store for U to compare the pricing of the camera you are checking out.

Let me know if you are travelling to Sweden so I can advice you as well.

    Peter

I%26#39;ve visited all three shops, and bought from Cathay photo and Alan photo before.

You may visit Cathay photo%26#39;s web site and ask for a quotation. Print the reply and bring along with you. At the shop, ask for the best price. If it is more than the price quoted online, show the print out.

While you are in town, first go to the fixed price store, like Best Denki or Courts to hava an idea of what%26#39;s the retail price like.

For Alan photo, I usually call the shop and ask for the best price before going to the shop.

    Alan Photo - http://www.alanphoto.com.sg/promotion.html

John 3:16 is @ Funan Centre, just opp where you stay.

Take note John 3:16 does not open on Sunday and they always pack with people.

Try to go during off-peak time like weekday afternoon, will not be so crowded.

I will suggest John 3:16 on top of Cathay Photo and Alan Photo.

    Family MRT tickets???

Can anyone tell me if you can get family tickets for the MRT?

Can you buy tickets for frequent travel or day passes?

We will be in Singapore for a week and plan to use MRT and buses for most of our travelling. There will be 7 of us. What is it likely to cost us per trip? Are children cheaper?

    Thanks

    Family MRT tickets???

    Mo, no, no family tickets.

But - you can by an %26#39;ezilink%26#39; card... which lets you hop on and off as much as you like, and and charges per trip (but is cheaper than buying each ticket individually, and means you don%26#39;t need to worry about coins or queuing).

They%26#39;ve just changed the system in 2009, so I%26#39;m not 100% sure what the exact price is now, but it%26#39;s fairly cheap. I think the card is ~S$15, and it comes with $13 worth of transport on it. The avg bus or train fair will be about $1 (for an adult), so you just keep using it until your money is gone, and you can top it up with more money if you want. When you%26#39;re finished with the card, you can return it and get a refund for the residual value.

Kids can travel free if they%26#39;re shorter than 90cm.

Link is here http://www.transitlink.com.sg/ if you want to find out all the details. You can buy an ezilink card at any MRT station, including the airport.

    Family MRT tickets???

Thanks for that. So kids over 90cm pay the same as adults? Is MRT generally cheaper for 5 than a taxi??

Yes, especially for longer distances. For a 30 mins. ride, for example, taxi will cost %26gt;$20, but train will be about $10 or less. For short distance, say 10 mins. ride, taxi will cost just %26lt;$10, but train will cost slightly %26gt;$5. Hope this helps.

Yes, for kids above 90cm, pay adults price.

Hop on and Off Tour when in port on Princess cruise

Is it possible/feasible to do the Hop on and Off when our cruise ship stops in Singapore for one day? We have done these tours all over the world, and enjoyed them greatly, but never when we were in port during a cruise. Thanks for the input

Hop on and Off Tour when in port on Princess cruise

Absolutely! You have a couple of options. HIPpo tours has Hop-on-hop-off bus that hits all the major sites. I think the cost is about S$25. (For some reason, I also think S$32) Another option... the one we used, is the SIA (Singapore Airline) Hop-on-hop-off bus. You do not have to have used Singapore Airlines to ride this bus... anyone can use it. It is only S$12 or S$6 if you have a Singapore Airline boarding pass. It also goes everywhere. Just look for the yellow SIA emblem at bus stops. I am not sure where the closest bus stop is to the cruise terminal, but you should be able to ask anyone in the terminal. You will find people in Singapore extremely friendly and happy to help. Have fun!

Beach Hotel - Adult friendly - any recommendations?

My husband and I are planning to stay in Singapore with another couple in February and were thinking about Sentosa Island as we mainly want a beach holiday, and Singapore is a must as our friends are stopping over there. Can anyone recommend a nice hotel on a beach that (and the area) is adult friendly? I heard Sentosa island is a bit like a theme park. Are there other nice beaches on the mainland? Any hotel recommendations?

    Thank you very much!

Beach Hotel - Adult friendly - any recommendations?

    Hi,

I wouldn%26#39;t consider Singapore a beach holiday destination. Sentosa has some great tourist attractions - but its not like a themepark. You might want to do some research on Singapore/Sentosa to get a more accurate picture of the place. You could look at the Official Singapore Tourism Website.

Beach Hotel - Adult friendly - any recommendations?

    Hi Mondfrau,

Sentosa Island offers the nicest beach waters in Singapore. Being the cleanest and most well-maintained. However having said this, please note that the Singapore waters is nothing like the blue azure waters of Tioman in Malaysia or Koh Samui in Thailand. Hence you%26#39;d have to adjust your expectations. In addition, the Singapore Sea is of very heavy traffic, getting almost choked up with tankers, container ships and bunker ships etc. I%26#39;m not sure about you, but some people hated this ships scene. And you could clearly see these ships lined up from the shores of Sentosa from some short distances.

However, Sentosa Island is a fun-filled island with different themes. You could revisit the WWII fort at Fort Siloso (available in my review and pictures on it), the colorful musical fountain, fun rides like the sky tower, the sentosa luge etc, undersea world, seasports along the beaches, beach volleyball, nightclubs along the beaches etc. All these are enough to keep you occupied for at least 2 full days.

Please also note that some parts of Sentosa is currently undergoing renovation, so you will see some covered construction sites.

if you still decide to stay in sentosa for a few days, these are the choices:

    1) Sentosa Resort and Spa: This is a lovely resort like hotel located on a hill, surrounded by greens, famous for its fine cuisines and its renowned botanica spa. Their rooms are very decent and up to standard.

    2) Amara Sanctuary Resort: This is a new hotel, with new lovely rooms. However, not much attractions within their resort.

    3) Rasa Sentosa: If you are looking to do seasports, this is the one for you as it is located at the beachfront. However, the hotel itself is a bit old compared to the previous two. And all their restaurants have no air-conditioning... it gets kind of humid in Singapore weather.

    4) Siloso Resort: I wouldnt recommend this now because it currently has a construction site right infront of the hotel. Not ideal.

    5) Coastal Sands Resort: This is the cheaper alternative.

    Hope this helps. Suying

    Hi Suying,

Your recommendations were most helpful! Thank you so much. We have now booked the Sentosa Resort %26amp; Spa and can%26#39;t wait to come to Singapore.

Could you also please recommend some must see things in Singapore/ Sentosa and advise on the best possible way to travel from Cheni airport to the hotel? We are arriving at 8.40pm on a Monday (9th Feb). Thank you!

    Hi Monfrau,

In terms of culture, the special highlight of Singapore is such that we are a multi-racial country. The majority being the Chinese, Muslims and the Indians. As such, you would be able to catch a glimpse of the different cultures/customs of these races.

For a quick overall peep of Singapore, you might want to join the Hippo Bus Tours (hop on and off concept), on it there will be a commentator who will brief you on a short introductory of Singapore tourism. You will get to see the Chinatown, the Little India and Bugis.

    http://www.ducktours.com.sg/index.html

However, I wouldnt recommend you to take their ';duck-boat'; ride which will bring you on land and sea tour. The tour is too short for you to see or experience anything and the sight-seeing is not worth it. Join it only if you just want to experience taking the land/sea boat. Please note that the ride on the land is pretty bumpy - I almost vomitted on the ride.

    What to see in ChinaTown:

A must to visit is the Chinatown Heritage Centre.

    www.chinatownheritage.com.sg/visitor.htm

it showcases the early settlers of Sg. Very interesting site as the props in the museum looks very real. I was pretty impressed by the tour.

A good food to eat in Chinatown for lunch would be the Yum Cha Restaurant. It serves delicious chinese good and is pretty well-known in Sg! Don%26#39;t miss it.

    http://www.yumcha.com.sg

There is a big buddist temple at Keong Saik Street in Chinatown. And it%26#39;s well-known for its gold buddha. Good to take a peep.

In chinatown you could also find some souvenirs. But please note that they might mark up the prices for you. There are also some shopping malls in Chinatown but these shops usually sells less fashionable stuff.

    Little India:

This is the place where you will see some indian crafts, like henna tattoo (non permanent). And you could find some indian goodies to try. Visit the indian temple also. There are a handful of Indian coffeeshops or restaurants for you to try out their food. =)

    Bugis:

It is an interesting place with a mixture of culture and that of the commercial shopping malls. In bugis you can find the shopping mall named Parco and Bugis Junction, it is also interconnected with the Intercontinental Hotel.

But out of this shopping mall, to one side you will find the street market of bugis selling fashionable stuff (mainly non-air conditioned). To another side you will see a long stretch of shophouses full of restaurants. If you manage to see a chinese stall selling duck rice/noodle along this stretch named Liang Seah Street. Try it. It%26#39;s good and cheap. And you%26#39;ll also see lots of steamboat (soup based) restaurants. On another side yet you will see the ethnic chinese area, where you could also go into a chinese temple. There are two main different types of chinese temple in Sg: One is Taoism and another buddhism.

Other interesting places in Singapore includes:

Singapore Zoo: You could have a morning breakfast with the Orang Utan. Join the Night Safari Tour. Visit the birdpark (just next to the zoo).

Wild Wild Wet in Pasir Ris, White Sands Resort. This is a fun water splash theme park. It is not a very big scale theme park but is fun enough for an alternative thing to do in Sg. http://www.wildwildwet.com

    Shopping in Singapore:

Singapore has no shortage of shopping malls. And the most bustling place to shop is in Orchard where it houses the Wisma Atria, the Takashimaya, the CK Tangs, the Shaw, the Borders, the Far East Shopping, The DFS (duty free shop) etc. Another shopping mall nearest to Sentosa is the Vivocity. You%26#39;ll have ample time to shop there. =)

Another interesting place to explore is the City Hall Area. There is the St Andrews Church which is open for tourist visiting also. It has an interesting architecture.

In City Hall you will also find the Suntec City Shopping Mall and the Marina Square Shopping Mall. Other than shopping you could take a nice scenic walk to the Esplanade. It is located next to the Sinapore River. To catch a lunch break, you might want to try out the open-air stalls located just next to the esplanade building. It serves delicious and cheap singapore local food. Try out the barbequed chicken wings, the mutton soup known as the kambing soup, the satays, the noodles etc! Don%26#39;t worry about getting a stomachache after eating the open air stalls, singapore hawkers are all regulated by the government. So it is very safe.

A walk down the river you will be able to reach the One Fullerton. This is a stretch of restaurants for chill out in the evening. you could catch a dinner or a few drinks there. Good relaxing place. Right opposite the One Fullerton you will also see The Fullerton Hotel. It is interesting coz it used to be a singapore post centre converted into a hotel. It is of a colonial Architecture. Good to take pictures.

When you are done with these you could then take a Singapore Bum Boat ride which will take you on a cruise along the Singapore River. http://www.rivercruise.com.sg

    When in Sentosa:

Try out the Sentosa Luge (quite fun), visit the fort siloso (get into the tunnel, and go to the top to catch a good seaview, watch the musical fountain (song of the sea) i just watched it this weekend and it was great! Got a little fireworks also!, catch the merlion view, venture to the underwater world, chill out by the beach restaurants.

I see that you%26#39;ve chosen the Sentosa Resort and Spa. Good choice! I%26#39;ll be there next week to try out their renowned spa botanica. Will let you know if it is good!

These are enough to keep you busy for a good few days. Feel free to ask any more details for the exact locations of any place of interest.

    Cheers,

    Suying

I would think the best way to reach your hotel is via a taxi as the mrt doesnt have direct access to the Sentosa Island and you would have to change a few trains to reach Sentosa Island if you were to take MRT. Very cumblesome.

Taxi Fare Rate: For peak hours surcharge

Monday - Friday : 7.00am to 9.30am 35% of metered fare 35% of metered fare

Monday – Saturday: 5.00pm to 8.00pm 35% of metered fare 35% of metered fare

    Pickup from Airport Surcharge:

    Friday-Sunday from 5.00pm to 12 midnight $5.00 $5.00

At all other times $3.00 $3.00

Hence if you would be taking taxi after 8pm, which you should be, you will avoid the peak surcharge but will be paying a S$5 if it is a friday, sat or sun.

Hence your taxi fare will be around S$22 + S$5 or S$3 = S$27 or S$25. (if no big traffic jam)

The drive will be take you about 35-40 minutes depending on traffic.

However, please also note that there will be a surcharge to get into sentosa at S$2 per person. But as a hotel guest, i%26#39;m not sure if you are entitled free passes. It%26#39;s good to check it with your hotel.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,

    Suying

That%26#39;s really great information! I am very grateful for your help!

If you ever come to England, let me know and I will try and help with your trip.

    Hi Mondfrau,

Hope that your trip to Singapore will be a fruitful one! When you are here, don%26#39;t hesitate to drop me any questions if in doubt.

And yes, England is on one of my dream list to go! I%26#39;ll bug you then when I%26#39;m going!

  • Which hotel, help wanted!

We are travelling to Singapore for a 6 days holiday during Easter. This is the first holiday with hubby without the children, so I am really looking forward to it!! Also, this is our first time in SIN.

However, I%26#39;m really confused with the hotels, they all seem pretty much the same, at least the ones within our budget. I would really appriciate any advice on where to stay out of the following:

    - Fairmont (deluxe room)

    - Mandarin Marina (Meritus clubroom)

    - Inter Continental (deluxe room)

    - Pan Pacific (deluxe balcony)

All these options would be within our budjet.

We are going to take it easy, do some shopping, mabye visit a spa, relax by the pool etc.

    Thanks!

    Which hotel, help wanted!

on ur list, I would go with Fairmont. But I would recommend that since it is within ur budget, have a look at Naumi (nice boutique hotel and great for a couple).

    tripadvisor.com/GoListDetail-i8205-Singapore…

    Have a great trip !

    Which hotel, help wanted!

It%26#39;s a bit difficult to choose as all 4 are fabulous! And each with their own highlights, and all are close to shopping malls.

If your interest is in relaxation/spa/shopping, I would opt to go with Mandarin Marina Clubroom(the one in Marina Square and Not Orchard Right?) Mandarin Marina%26#39;s spa is by the St Gregory Spa... which is supposed to be GOOD! the MM also has a more spacious feel, and they have the exotic little birds who will add music and echo to the lobby. And beautiful oil paintings lined up on the walls. A soothing ambience and offers a different touch to a hotel rather than just being modern.

They also have a pretty good live band at night at the lounge area.

    Cheers,

    Where to stay

I%26#39;m looking at going to Singapore for 3 nights in October. I%26#39;ve been previously and stayed at the Carlton Hotel in Marina Bay. But I%26#39;m looking at staying elsewhere as the prices for Carlton are a lot more expensive than what I remember.

I%26#39;m now looking at staying at either the Bayview Hotel or the Holiday Inn Atrium, however the Holiday Inn seems to have some bad reviews about it%26#39;s location.

Has anyone stayed at either of these two hotels to be able to advise which one is a more ideal place to stay?

    Thanks

    Where to stay

Bayview is ok....or you can try Grand Plaza Park Hotel City Hall or Golden Landmark Hotel.

    Where to stay

btw the time u arrive, there are a few other new hotels that would have opened so do a bit more research (coz for the price that Bayview is charging nowadays, there r other hotels in that price range).

    Good Luck

    tripadvisor.com/GoListDetail-i8205-Singapore…

PS. since u had been to SIN B4, u know the city being so small, as long as the hotel is nice, it doesnt matter that much where the hotel is located coz u can get around in a jiffy and cheaply in this city. HIA has a shuttle that takes u to the nearest MRT but I have to agree, HIA will not be on top of my list in that price range.

Also, not sure the price will apply to u in Oct but there is a promotional rate going on right now for the Quincy (really chic hotel right in town, opening next month - Feb 2009! Amazing rate for free wifi, club room access etc. Have to say I cant wait to check it out except that that infinity pool on the 11th floor is pretty cool but a bit scary (see thru glass so u can look down the side of the building !)

    3 nights in Singapore

We decided to fly home from Malaya via Singapore and are now hearing horror stories of excessive hotel/restaurant/bar prices. Any recommendations of the best area to stay for sightseeing/shopping/dining whilst we are there and any hotel recommendations (4/5 star if we can afford it!). We hope that the visit will be worth the detour.

    3 nights in Singapore

    Hello,

The detour to Singapore should be well worth your while. There is a lot to see and do there. If your focus is eating and drinking out at bars or restaurants then it will get expensive (most big cities are). But, you can sightsee and eat out cheaply in Singapore. Eating at hawker centres or food courts lets you sample local dishes for only a few dollars. The MRT underground and bus system is cheap and easy to use.

Areas and hotels I would recommend to stay in are:-

Orchard Road area: Concorde Hotel, Royal Plaza on Scotts Hotel,Holiday Inn Park View, Traders Hotel.

Bugis area: Golden Landmark Hotel, Allson Hotel.

Others to look at are Carlton Hotel, Clarion Collection Rendezvous Hotel, City Bayview.

    Hope you enjoy Singapore.

    Travelling with babies!

    Hi

I%26#39;m planning our trip back to NZ and have two children who will be 11 months and 2yrs 2 months. I Have booked the bulk head seats plus the sky cot with singapore airlines. We have decided on breaking the 24 hr trip with 3 days in singapore. Not sure if this is a good or bad thing. Can anyone tell me if you can buy SMA gold in singapore or should I bring it with me. Are you allowed to bring baby food/milk powder through customs into singapore? Also what is the rule now with bringing liquid onto planes. Websites are saying only 100ml allowed! Can anyone give me some advice! Thanks!

    Travelling with babies!

If I recall correctly, baby food is exempted from the 100ml rule at Singapore%26#39;s airports. Am not too sure about the availability of SMA Gold formula in the supermarkets, but you can carry some in a tiny container in your hand baggage and leave the big tin in your checked baggage. This is the easiest way, and I am sure Singapore Airlines%26#39; cabin crew would be happy to provide hot water for you to prepare your tots%26#39; milk anytime. Cheers.

    Travelling with babies!

You can bring as much carry on baby milk on board as your baby needs for the fligh SMA gold is not available in Singapore, most baby milk is of the powdered variety that you mix with water.

    Day trip to KL, (Possible?)

I will be in Singapore for 3 days and was wondering what the possibility of a day trip to KL, to see the Petronas was.

I saw Transtar was recommended for travel, but would there be enough time to make this a worthwhile trip?

    Day trip to KL, (Possible?)

I%26#39;d reccomend taking the overnight sleeper train to get you into KL before 8am. It leaves at around 10pm the night before from Singapore, so it save you 1 nights hotel accomadation. You can take a coach back from KL leaving at around 2pm to get you into Singapore in the early evening.

    Day trip to KL, (Possible?)

If you want a day trip to Kl i think its better to fly. you can catch the the first flight and copme back on the last flight.

Should you decide to fly, just know that both the low-cost terminal (Air Asia and Tiger Airways) and the main airport (Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines) is 75km away from downtown KL. A cab ride will take 50 mins and cost approx RM80.

If you take the executive coach (5 hour journey), try Aeroline (www.aeroline.com.my) or Odyssey (www.odysseynow.com.my) ... both of which stop and pick-up directly across the Petronas Twin Towers (at Avenue K for Odyssey and Corus Hotel for Aeroline). Both buses have personal video screens as well as cabin service (they serve decent meals and beverages).

it%26#39;s possible but it wouldn%26#39;t be fun at all. either by flight or coach ride, it%26#39;ll take almost 5 to 6 hrs just to get there and another 5 to 6 hours to return to Singapore. although the flight is only 45 mins, you would need to check in an hour or two earlier, about 20 to 30 mins to reach Changi Airport, and another 45 to 60 mins to get to where the action is in K. L. itself.

call me a wimp but i wouldn%26#39;t want to take the overnight coaches, too many accidents lately. the speed the coaches are driven at night and day is a world of difference. btw, do remember to get travel insurance.

oh what about traveling by overnight sleeper train, it is safe???

    Hi theya70

Travel by sleeper train is very safe but at time the arrival time is very erratic.

You can book ticket online but need to registered first prior to booking

    thanks leopang for the info.

  • The new Ibis hotel or Holiday Inn Atrium

    Hi,

My sister and I are looking to go to Singapore for 3 nights later this year and we were looking at staying at the Carlton Hotel again but it has gotten to be quite expensive.

Our thoughts are either Holiday Inn Atrium or the new Ibis hotel which is being built but are unsure which would be better.

We are looking at location mainly for shopping etc but will head to the Quays for dinner too.

We also would be looking for plenty of restaurants and hopefully Hawkers around the hotel we stay at.

Which do you think would be better for location out of the two? Also I know that Holiday Inn has a pool but does anyone know if the Ibis will?

    Thanks!

The new Ibis hotel or Holiday Inn Atrium

I understand that the Ibis will not have a pool. We are booked to go there and that was a disappointment for us but to be honest always stayed at a hotel with a pool in the past but because it was usually raining did not get much chance to use it.

The new Ibis hotel or Holiday Inn Atrium

Well, Holiday Inn Atrium and Ibis are definitely not in the same league. Holiday Inn Atrium is rated one star above Ibis and is positioned as a family hotel, while the Ibis is positioned as a great value, no frills hotel. If an on-site swimming pool is an important part of your vacation, then go for the Holiday Inn Atrium - this hotel has been around for ten years or more but has undergone a couple of management changes. If you can live without an on-site swimming pool, and save some $ for great shopping, then choose the Ibis. I always like staying in spanking new hotels. Ibis in Bencoolen Street is very near Carlton Hotel so if you liked living in that area with its shopping, museums, restaurants and watering holes, then go for the Ibis. You may also wish to consider the Golden Landmark Hotel, which has a pool and good reviews from TA members, located one MRT station away from the Carlton. Cheers.

Not sure why anyone would need a pool when the purpose is to shop, eat %26amp; Location been important.^_^

I think Australia have better beach for that beach side relaxation.

Ibis Hotel @ bencoolent Singapore would be the best option when you are here to shop, eat %26amp; like having most place just nearby the hotel.

Ibis r basic hotels that doesnt come with too many extras but since it is brand new, it should be more than fine.

If u r looking for a pool, I am not sure what your budget is but there is a pre-opening special going on for the Quincy (opening next month) that is really a steal as it includes all your meal, free wifi, local calls, etc

u said it is later in the year so I am not sure if this rate will apply.

    Good Luck

PS. u should consider the Furama hotels if u want to be in that area.

Ibis Hotel will not have a pool.

If it is all about location. Go for ';Ibis';.

  • getting from airport to carpenter st

any body got info on how to get to carpenter st from airport or how much a taxi is

getting from airport to carpenter st

Generally a taxi from the airport to downtown is probably a little more than SGD20. However, please note there will be surcharges added if you take a cab after midnight.

A cheaper option would be to take the MRT (mass rapid transport. equivalent to your London Underground). You would need to change trains though. It%26#39;s not a direct route. I believe the nearest station would be Clark Quay.

    Pan Pacific Buffet

For those that might be interested, these are the current prices for the breakfast and lunch buffets at the Pan Pacific hotel in Singapore:

The buffet breakfast at Global Kitchen is $35++, thus the nett price is at $41.20.

For lunch on weekdays (Mondays to Fridays), Global Kitchen is serving Buffet at $38++, thus nett cost is at $44.70.

On Sundays, Global Kitchen in serving Champagne Brunch at $108++ per person (with alcohol) and $88++ per person (non alcohol). Thus, nett price is $127.12 and $103.58 respectively.

    Bon Appetit! :)

    Pan Pacific Buffet

    Just some comments:

Although the Global Kitchen is considered good culinary for dinner, I thought it was a little disappointment when i tried their buffet breakfast recently.

The spread was just average and it wasn%26#39;t particularly tasty. I wouldn%26#39;t opt to go for their buffet breakfast again.

    summer tavern hostel

    summer tavern hostel

    Hi Sue,

Just realized you are the same person with the question on getting to carpenter street. Yes, take the MRT. You shouldn%26#39;t have any difficulty with changing trains. And it will give you a kind of ';preview'; on getting around Singapore by MRT!

    Hawker centre near airport

Hi, just wondering if anyone can tell me which Hawker Centre is closest to the airport? How far from the airport is it?

We are flying into Singapore in about a week and have about a 4 hr stopover and really want to find a Hawker Centre to eat at during that time. We ate at them earlier in the yr on a 4 night stopover in Singapore and LOVED IT!!!

    Thanx

Hawker Centre.. you mean without AC type or those with AC?

We had hundred of Hawker Centre.

    Tampines

    Bedok

    Upper Changi Road

U remember which Hawker centre u went?

    Hawker centre near airport

Thanks, we are not fussy which one, doesn%26#39;t have to have A/C, just which ever one is closest to the airport and has a good variety.

Hi, a year ago I read a post talking about a hawker center within the airport. I don%26#39;t know if it is still up-to-date...here it is:

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g294262-i1747-k152鈥?/a>

there is 2 food court at the airport (one is older in T1 and the newer bigger one at T2). Which Terminal u flying into ?

Anyways, if T1, go to the basement (past McDonalds towards the back, go out those doors and down those stairs, past another door, turn right thru%26#39; those doors and u r there).

T2 - go to the parking garage where the Taxistand is, take the elevators up to (dont remember which floor but think it is 4th) the food court, u will need to walk up a short flight of stairs then thru%26#39; a set of doors and into the food court. Highly recommend the beef noodles !!!

    Hi _de_last_one,

For T1 should be Burger King not McDonalds.

T1 don%26#39;t have McDonalds, if I%26#39;m not wrong

BTW, in singapore, we call w/o AC as Hawker centre, with AC is Food Courts.

Food courts is slightly more expensive than Hawker Centre.

Hawker Centre .. some vendor carry the food to your table. So you must get a table 1st and know what is your table number. But some vendor is self-service

    Food Courts.. 100% self-service

you can find one at Changi village very close to airport. Besides, there are shop eateries around, and you may want to wander a little around that area before heading beck to airport.

That was me looking for the Airport Canteen/Foodcourt last year before my trip. tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g294262-i1747-k152鈥?/a>

Well, I foubd the one in T2, and is wasn%26#39;t too hard to find from the carpark. Plenty of good stalls there including a Satay place. If you only have 4hours between flights I wouldnt venture out of the Aiport trying to find a place and rushing about. Just stick to the 2 places within the airport. Even though this is a staff canteen it is open to the public and the stalls display 2 prices, a discounted staff price and a still reasonable public price.

    Hi Syd70

Take the advice from those who recommended the HAWKER CENTRE in the Airport. again, i reiterate... you don%26#39;t have to leave the airport. just remember...

they are not HAWKER CENTRE OR FOOD COURT in theory they are just the AIRPORT CANTEEN for staffs working there. don%26#39;t you worry about whether you can go there for your food. you know, lots of singaporeans staying in the east go there for the food as well. they are in fact... good very good. i can assure you that. in case, you wondering which is the best... most is the best but the longest que there is not necessary the best but most likely the cheapest.

so remember, Terminal One STAFF CANTEEN is easier to find. just ask the staff working in BURGER KING for directions if you need to.

Terminal Two STAFF CANTEEN is a little tricky... they can only be reach from the the carpark lifts on the left of the TERMINAL facing the main road. not sure, go ask the carpark office attendants on the 2nd floor.

remember, both Terminal One and Two staff canteens are equally popular with singaporeans as well. on weekends, it is super crowded.

    enjoy...

I was just at the Changi VIllage Hawker Center highly recommend the Nasi Lemak at the ';International'; stand. S$3.50 for a plate, perhaps the best sambal and ikan billis I ever have. You can find this stand by the line of people waiting.

Changi Village Hawker is nice, as you can take a walk along the beach or watch the bum boats depart for Pulau Ubin.

    Question for Changi Experts --

Does T3 have an employee canteen, similar to T1 and T2??

    Thanks much!!

  • Raffles Grill

My wife and I are stopping over in Singapore on the first day of our honeymoon in the Maldives and I have decided to surprise her with lunch at Raffles Grill. Can someone give me an idea of the prices I can expect?

    Raffles Grill

Have you checked out their website? We considered going for afternoon tea and it does give the price on the website. If you don%26#39;t get any responses You could always ask them to send you a menu.

    Raffles Grill

The Grill menu isnt held on their website....your best option is to ask for a sample menu to be emailed.

One reason why u cant get a menu is coz they dont have a fixed one. Dont be surprised that there is an international chef in house for a week or two and that the menu is of his/her specialty.

Every time I am there, it is always different except one thing, they offer a fixed priced menu for about US$125 (or thereabouts I dont recall the exact amount but definitely more than US$100). This is usually a 5 to 7 course set meal (from appetizers to dessert).

I love lamb so tend to order that if it is available, cost is usually US$30 price range. Anyways, have never been there for lunch so I am not sure what they offer but I would assumed it will be lighter food and usual lunch items like ahi tuna salad, etc and price is always better for lunch menu.

Like others had mentioned, u can ask for the menu for the date u r going to be in town.

Congrats on your union and enjoy SIN !

Stayed at raffles 4 weeks ago cost £1450 for 2 nights with snacks and drinks. We was going to eat at the grill but did not get round to it. The food looked 1st class. IT WILL COST A LOT.Drinks about £11 a go. Has it is your honeymoon and if you can a afford it, why not.

What an earth did you get for your money for that rate. Did that include breakfast, we have always wanted to stay at Raffles but could not justify that kind of costs, we have eaten in the Grill Room and the Tiffin Room at the Indian buffet and had many a Singapore Sling in the Long Bar but didn%26#39;t realise it was so expensive to stay there.

It cost about £500 a night room only, but it was a nice room with tiffin thrown in. The rest was drinks and a snacks in the long bar.Plus we got the Raffles car to the airport.I think rooms start at £300 per night. My wife thinks it was worth it but I am still thinking about it.

We used to stay at the Sheraton for around £130.00 a night three of us, bed %26amp; breakfast, all our laundry, free flowing champagne nibbles the whole works (3 years ago) now we have resulted to the new Ibis hotel room only for around £80.00 a night, cannot justify the prices the hotels are asking per night for these luxuries. Hopefully they will see sense, we have been to Singapore every year for the last 10, but unfortunately this maybe the last. We love the country but as you know holidays have to be value for money, great you had the opportunity to stay at Raffles.

staying at Raffles was a one off. On the way home we stayed at the Ibis Hong Kong £171 for 3 nights.

    Hi Ian,

I also think the price at Raffles is a bit too stretched. Given that kind of price, i would rather place myself in the hands of St Regis.

I%26#39;ve tried Raffles Grill and thought it was nothing really fantastic. Didnt leave much impression for me. So you actually didnt miss much. I forgot how much I spent but it%26#39;s an estimate of about S$200-S$300 for two pax.

As for Deano, you might want to check out restaurants in St Regis (more romantic ambience), The Cliff at Sentosa Resort and Spa, the Blu at Shangri La etc, San Marco at The Fullerton Hotel (overlooking the sea and the esplanade-perfect romantic view), le Saint Geran at the Fullerton Boat House (unique concept and overlooking the sea and esplanade also) and some other restaurants along the One Fullerton area. These are all romantic areas to consider with quality food.

    Hope this helps.
